Vinnie worked in the ground for hours, tilling and digging. It was hot in the sunlight, not normal at all for a febuary afternoon this close to seattle. He could hardly remember it now but it seemed farmiliar to him.
...
'Maya and I did this for you my friend. It is only fitting that you would be here with me now, and she will stay here with you after. I know that what remains here of you my old friend will hold her close'
...
With the hole a fare size Vinnie brings out a large wooden carving of a dragon, and places the base in the hole.
...
'Sleeper you asshole, I wish you were here now.'
...
Upon the back of the dragon he places three figures one a a gauru, one of a man, and one of a Crinos gurahl bending herself to protect the other two. and last, in front a figure of Helios trying to burn the other four.
...
'Amara, do you remember this. It was the day you got that spear through your shoulder.'
...
He pulled out the spear and held it before the graves.
Old words came to him. Old words that Maya whispered as a prayer, onto the wind in the first of the predawn light the night they had saved the caern. He wondered if he should do the same.
...
'Mangi I hope you can hear this.'
"From dust are born the sun, the sea and life
Dust we are, and to dust we shall return
It swirls in hope and song, and then swirls on
But dust does not forget the dream that stirs it."
"Maya, I am not gurahl, I cannot follow your ways. I will follow the ways of Raven and I swear that the gurahl will learn of this wrongful slaughter. If they are as you have told me then they will come for him."
"Amara, witness that here lies only the marker of her passing, and I trust you to relay the message my friend."
And Vincent McKenzi wiped the dirt from his hand as he walked from the grave.
"No one was saved."
