Many people do not understand how grapples work in our game so this is a clarification so that players are not confused about this combat maneuver. Keep in mind, some of the rules for this maneuver have been modified for balance purposes.
In order to initiate a grapple, a character must succeed on a Dex+Brawl check in order to grab the opponent. The opponent is allowed to block, dodge, or parry this as it is effectively a "To Hit" roll. If the aggressor is successful with his Dex+Brawl check, a grapple is then initiated with the aggressor in control of the grapple.
Once a grapple is initiated, the defender has 3 options when it is his turn to act.
1. He may try to break free from the grapple. This requires either a Str or a Dex + Brawl roll on his part. The aggressor may resist with a Str+Brawl check to keep the grapple. If the defender is successful, the grapple is broken and actions resume as normal.
2. He may attempt to reverse the hold and become the aggressor. This requires a Str+Brawl roll on his part. The aggressor may resist with a Str+Brawl check to keep control of the grapple. If the defender scores two or more successes over the aggressor, he, becomes the aggressor and gains control of the grapple.
3. He may attempt a non-physical action that does not require intense concentration (ie. Gift activation, fetish activation, verbal actions etc.)
If the aggressor of the grapple is still in control of the grapple by the time he receives another action, the aggressor has a few more options.
1. The aggressor may declare a Clinch. At this point, the aggressor will roll Str as damage.
2. The Aggressor may take non-physical actions in much the same way the defender can. The Grapple is still in play and the aggressor is still in control.
3. The Aggressor may release the opponent as a free action ending the grapple and take a declared action as normal. (Note. The aggressor must declare that he is doing this during the declaration phase or face a +1 difficulty for changing his action as per the change action rules.)
