As night falls in the Hall of Hollowed Heroes, the darkness is driven back by the crackling light of a bonfire. Sitting within the blaze is an Oriental Fire Dragon -- Brand, Lucia Blade Whisper's Numen and oldest companion. Ranged around the outside of the fire are those closest to Blade Whisper in life -- her two surviving packmates, a close friend, and her foster father, Jonathan Blood-Rain.
Echo stands between Sorrow's Bane and Blood-Rain. Her eyes are swollen from tears, but they have been scrubbed from her face; her voice is raw and scratchy, but steady nonetheless.
The day I met my sister was a miracle. I couldn't stop touching her those first few days; I had to make sure she was real, that she was there. I know she -- and many others -- thought it strange, but she tolerated it. And now I regret not a single moment of it, however odd it seemed.
