THE OUTSIDER – Some people just don’t belong. Whether it’s a club, profession, tribe, or culture, this person is clearly not included or welcome.
Driving the domain’s streets, walking her sidewalks, I listen. I listen to what the mortals, the buildings, the roads themselves, have to say. Once upon a time, I would’ve done this on the plains—listening to the wind, the grass, the animals, the sunlight itself. The city, she is loathe to give up her secrets now and I have that urge again to run.
To run. To flee. To leave this city behind.
I’m so far north I’m almost out of the domain. I did not come here consciously. My instinct is still strong. My insight less so.
THE WORLD, REVERSED – No one can get a break; the world or its people seem to be determined to provide nothing but resistance.
I am leaving her behind.
This isn’t my normal thought out plan. This is a thief in the night, a rat from a sinking ship, an assignation gone wrong. I feel the wrongness of it all even before I see what awaits me.
I stop the car, not understanding what I’m seeing. I step out, knowing that I should flee back into the safety of the domain. I need to see it with my own eyes, hear it with my own ears, feel it with my own senses.
Five steps beyond the car and it ends.
The world ends.
DESTRUCTION – Something important is irrevocably destroyed. Though it is painful or unwelcome, the loss clears the way for something new.
No stars. No ground. No buildings. No road. No nothing but the abyss.
Closer to the edge. Close enough to look over. Close enough to tempt fate.
I fall.
I fall into nothing
All I know is terror.
I fall until a hand grabs me and yanks me back.
Back to ground. Back into the domain. Back into reality.
THE FRIEND – The buddy, the chum, or the lover, this person is family by choice; a relationship often much closer than blood.
He scowls at me from under a brown bowler. “Don’t do that. She doesn’t forgive.” He scolds me like a child. Too many questions.
He raises a hand to shush me before I can ask even one. “She’s chosen you. The world ends here now.” His smile is sad and knowing as he picks up a ukulele case and turns away.
Glancing over his shoulder, he shrugs. “We aren’t the only ones either. More of the family knows what awaits out there.”
Then he walks away, bare feet on concrete.
I’m left knowing that I know him but I don’t know how.
NESCIENCE – When intuition and deduction both fail, one is left with no understanding of what is really going on around them.
