"Taichou, did you hear that?"
In the midst of battle, Kaito reached out to speak to Alexander over the pack link. The battle had been fierce up to this point and he thanked Gaia neither he or his alpha had yet been injured. But he sensed something in the distance. He couldn't make out if it was something he'd heard or merely felt, but his sense of battle told him something major had shifted the balance of their fight.
"What, did you find that bear yet?"
Alexander perked his ears in every direction, but his expression seemed tense and irritated. He hadn't noticed it. Kaito had warned him there were more enemies about, apparently taking their time in revealing themselves, but while that imminent fight was still at the forefront of their minds, it wasn't what he had felt just then.
I can't be sure, but I think we lost someone. Someone strong.
Alexander's paranoid glance darted from tree to tree but was unreadable aside from that. If he was concerned, the only sign was in his reply,
"Who?"
"Dunno."
Now Kaito was becoming irritated. It wasn't enough that their foes seemed content to wait them out, but not knowing how the rest of the battle was going didn't agree with him. Realizing his answer had reflected this fact, he decided to continue.
"I felt a very strong presence for only a moment and then it was gone, replaced by a vague sense of dread. As if we took a massive blow."
A scowl from his Alpha brought his attention back to their current struggle.
"It doesn't matter. Just focus on locating OUR enemies. We'll have time to mourn the dead when we've created a few more corpses of our own."
Shaking the black dread off his mind, Kaito began concentrating on the more pressing matter of locating those Fera he sensed earlier. Better to not be ambushed by them. He knew that as well as his Alpha did, but still... he couldn't shake the feeling that something significant had changed. He didn't have long to ponder, however because it was that moment that his enemies finally decided to emerge; at the North face of the Bawn.
"Found 'em. Layla's group."
No other words were needed. Like eager hunters of their prey, they were off, bolting in Layla's direction followed closely by Wind-Talen and Martin, who appeared every bit as bloodthirsty as they.
They arrived at the North face to find their allies a little worse for wear, but still holding strong. At least none of them had fallen. He found himself surprisingly thankful for that fact and yet, the mystery of who HAD fallen was all that more vexing. But even that was somewhat less troubling than the GIGANTIC FUCKING SPIDER engaged with Layla and her patrol. They had apparently arrived just in time to see her nearly bitten in half. Luckily she seemed to have survived, but was bleeding heavily and wasn't likely to survive another bite. The time was now to back her up while Rain-singer and Athena tended to her. A brief nod from Alexander was all that was necessary to plan their attack.
"Right. Let's see how spider legs taste."
...That was the plan anyway. But suddenly, Kaito felt his link to Alexander -and Rattlesnake- sever. A quick, almost panicked glance told him neither had been killed, but Rattlesnake had completely vanished.
"Shit. Guess they're not gonna make this easy."
His voice felt almost alien passing through the air; and slow. But with the mind link gone for now they'd have to make do, at least until biting the head off whichever enemy banished their totem.
"Don't get distracted. Just pick a leg and pull!
Kaito charged in to follow his Alpha, very narrowly dodging the black tendrils attempting to ensnare him on the way. It was true the battle would not be easy from then on.
Kaito couldn't hide his grin.
