I've had a few questions about Fetishes which means the ones started under Sarah are getting finished up and new characters are looking to start them.
Here is where we stand at the moment on fetish creation:
Rather than any minimum creation time, we will be handling things more organically. You don't have to do a ton of prep work, but if you don't you will have a lot of trouble convincing the spirit(s) they should move in. Think about it like trying to build a skyscraper on a foundation made out of matchsticks.
Having a billion dice or a dozen gifts to use won't work as a substitute for putting good thought and effort into your early fetish steps, but it will be useful later when you are getting ready to do the rite itself.
As to type and difficulty, the early steps are up to you. Do what your character would think a spirit would want you to do. If you don't know, seek advice from your elders. If the player is having difficulty, check out the books for examples or ask fellow players/staff for ideas OOC.
Mechanically, just start a card on your own and start adding steps to it as you accomplish them.
Anytime you do something toward the fetish (crafting, spirit blessing, a pretty yet terribly cliche scene where you bathe your newly formed silver knife in the light of the moon ) get the ST or spirit narrator to sign off on it. There is no set, mandatory amount of steps at this stage, but the more effort/detail you put into it, the more favorable the spirit will be toward you. You are asking it to live there, after all.
There is also no minimum or maximum difficulty these steps need to have. However, they will be especially important if you are trying to make something that is out-of-character for someone like you to have. If you haven't laid the groundwork, sometimes it is going to be a deal-breaker. Also, again, the spirits will respect effort. I fully expect there to be some growing pains and a few failures as people struggle to get this right.
When you feel you are ready, get a scene and find the spirit you want to use. "I want to learn a gift," or "I want to make a fetish" are fine for meta-game shorthand, but IC you are summoning or finding a spirit and trying to talk it into giving up its freedom for you. The scenes will be run like any other scene where you are exploring or interacting with the world, and they are going to be handled that way. No promises we won't whisk you off to something else entirely unrelated to your fetish if you happen to turn over a rock that has plot under it
When you approach the spirit, you will role-play it out. If you manage to negotiate a chiminage that is acceptable, we will write up a more formal card if the earlier one is a bit messy, or sign the one you have.
The chiminages will parallel rank challenges in difficulty.
Thus, there will be nothing stopping a Cliath from trying to make a rank 5 fetish, but they will almost certainly die trying to complete a challenge meant for an elder, and the spirits involved might make it even harder to teach a lesson.
Once you feel you have completed the challenge, return to the spirit. If you passed, you will have the chance to do Rite of the Fetish. Your degree of success and the overall success of all your steps will play into the difficulty as will any other pertinent factors, including bans.
From this point forward the rules (as soon as I give them another quick read, and make any necessary changes) will follow the rules for the expanded Rite of the Fetish laid out in Hammer and Klaive.
