Assistant Coroner Gone With Corpse
Remains, Coroner Both Missing, Police Say
By CAROL KEANE
Seattle County Assistant Coroner Jacob Juby, 45, was pronounced missing at 12:50 p.m. Thursday by the Seattle Police Department, after disappearing from the first precinct office sometime between last Saturday the 23rd and the following Sunday. In addition to the A.C., a set of remains is also missing, along with a few minor pieces of laboratory equipment.
Seattle County Coroner Cameron Jamison, who pronounced the remains of a homeless man dead at 1:10 p.m., mere hours before turning over the coroner's lab for the graveyard shift to the missing Juby, said regarding the missing remains, that a severe bacterial infection along with an intentional drug overdose was the likely cause of the homeless man's death, but that he had no idea who would want the remains of the indegent man, and has no knowledge of where A.C. Juby might be.
The 'John Doe' probably died around 5 p.m. Saturday, April 22nd, Jamison said, however it was difficult to tell based on the rapid decomposition associated with where the remains had been found, lying beneath a vent near Pike's Place Market. Vents are popular places for homeless to seek refuge during cold nights, however they also tend to attract vermin and harmful bacteria as well. The man was estimated to be in his late 70's.
Juby had checked into the coroner's office that same night, said Sgt. Rudy Williams, spokesperson for the Police Department, which is investigating the case with Juby, and the missing remains.
“We found evidence in the room that would support a dumping of materials, bent vents and drains, but nothing to indicate what was removed, aside from the missing remains, some tapes, a bin, and of course Assistant Coroner Juby himself being missing,” Jamison said.
No complete autopsy was performed of the missing remains, and toxicology tests by the state medical examiner’s office will not be able to determine the exact cause of death, since the indigent man's blood samples were also taken, he said.
A.C. Joby's roommate, Charles Fielder Jr., filed a missing persons report the following day with the Seattle County Sheriff’s office.
Juby had been at the first pricinct morgue since June 17th, 2014 and was instrumental in identifying evidence in over 150 cases for the SPD in that time.
He was scheduled for a court appearance May 10th to testify related to a recent homocide where he had helped identify kerf marks on bones that matched a murder weapon used in a 2015 assualt and homocide.
Juby, who became an assistant Seattle County Coroner in 2014, was considered likely to become coroner in 2017. Police are hopeful that in finding Assistant Coroner Juby, light will also be shed on the missing remains.
