Something like crickets chirruped. A gentle breeze shifted across her path. She thought she caught the scent of someone, but then it was gone. She heard the night the way she had always imagined it. Except there was something missing...
Daniel
Her anniversary should have been something she could have been happy about. They hadn't actually been married. They counted from a different line. But here she sat in the park, in front of her usual bench, staring at the sky, alone.
Moira sighed and thought back on the nights they had shared together. They were wild and rough and perfect. She missed it. She missed him. There was no one who could make her feel like he did. Not that anyone showed her the interest. There weren't any candidates in the sept anyway, so it was a good place to remember and forget. It was a good sept to hide in, as long as you weren't being followed. One day, maybe she could move on from his memory.
She lifted the letter from her mother to read it once again. Mother had been happy, ecstatic really, at the gift. She had been elated at finally know what had happened to her husband and her son. Overjoyed that her own daughter had ended the family plague of the Mage. Moira wasn't going to correct her mother. Her mother had asked if Her daughter was coming home or not. Moira was inclined to say no, but she would go visit sometime. She would go back and look at what was left of the house. Maybe see if there was anything she could pull from the wreckage if her family hadn't. And she had someone she had to go see in specific when she came home....
She could still see his shining eyes. She remembered the tears in her own when she had been told where she would have to go to end the Mage. She wouldn't be able to hold on to the last piece of Daniel she had left.
Moira couldn't stand it any longer. She pulled out her wallet and flipped open the picture section. Pictures of her and Daniel, of her brother Michael, of those shining eyes.... A tear slid down her cheek looking at that sweet face again.
"Daniel Robert Connor Phelan" Moira whispered to herself. "I'm surprised I remember it all. It's been so long since I've seen you. You probably don't look anything like this anymore...." She smiled a wry smile and held the wallet to her chest. She folded it gently and put it away. She wiped away the tear and looked back at the letter.
"I'll come home soon, mum, even if only for a visit." She folded the letter away and stood up. She looked up at the stars once again and blew them a kiss. She whispered
"Happy anniversary, my love"
