"An entire coffee shop, you say?" a male voice in heavily German accented English. "Very interesting."
Tak heard the voice, and thought she could identify where it was coming from. She tried to open her eyes, but nothing happened. She tried to call out, but couldn't find her own mouth. Fear gripped her.
"Well, at least she is still alive." the German accent continued. "Fetch me the nanites." the sound of foot steps "No! not those nanites, those will melt her system! Stupid Ahroun, get out of my lab!"
At least she knew now that she was in the hands of Garou and not the bosses of the super-hacker who'd just tried to kill her. But she was still not sure that was a practical improvement. Hey, no, I don't want system melting nanites! She screamed, or tried to.
There was a spate of rapid and irritated German, although, spoken German sounds angry most of the time anyway. I don't speak German. Tak thought.
"I don't speak German." a quiet female voice said, obviously trying to remain patient.
"You! Theurge!" The German accent returned to speaking English. "You can stay and be of some help."
There was a click of high heeled shoes, then a voice in Tak's head.
"Tak?" The voice was a gentle female voice, full of concern.
Yes? Tak replied hesitantly.
Oh, thank Gaia. Let me introduce myself. I am ---------------, Glass Walker Theurge. I'm the one who had the vision of you in the Starbucks.
Um. What's going on? Tak asked, ignoring protocol in her rising panic. Why can't I see or move or anything?
Well, it seems your nervous system was entirely fried by the electric shock you received. It seems you've lost your sense of hearing, touch, taste, sight --
Exactly how much of my brain is left? Tak asked incredulously.
Oh, no. Your brain looks fine. All the damage seems to be in the nerves themselves, but don't worry, we have moon-bridged in the good Dr. here to help fix you up.
With nanites? Wouldn't a simple Mother's Touch work?
Unfortunately, no, well, I mean, yes, you'd be alive, but... The woman's thought voice trailed off.
But I wouldn't have a nervous system to speak of. Tak finished glumly. She couldn't imagine what kind of damage must have been done that the Gifts of Gaia would be unable to heal it, but then, she didn't really know what had happened to her.
Very likely. She continued. However, you do have several choices here.
Well, I want to be able to move again. Tak said sarcastically, choosing to be a vegetable was not a choice.
Ok, I understand, she said in a conciliatory tone, but we want you to know you have the choice. In order to repair the damage fully, we will need a combination of surgery and healing.
Don't take this the wrong way, I'm sure the good doctor knows more about this than me, but isn't neurosurgery a little... um, Tak faltered.
Not when you have nano tools. The woman replied.
Ah. Tak was not happy. She knew a little about nanotech, mostly from research and some stories from other Glass Walkers during her training, but the idea of depending on the little machines for her life was still not comforting.
The nanites we will use to perform the surgery are just to replace the missing nerve connections.
The German voice cut in again "And her pack has been contacted?" a pause as he waited for a response. "Excellent, now, are we all ready for the procedure?" The voice wandered out of Tak's range of hearing again.
But, the woman continued, we can also use them to enhance some of the systems they are repairing. Additionally, the doctor has offered as a gift for your achievement of the rank of Fostern a unique fetish that will help you with your use of computers. But its all your choice. If you choose this, you will have to live with having something foreign in your body for the rest of your life.
Tak thought about it, while the vague noises of the space around her being, presumably, prepped for her surgery went on in the background of her focus.
"Everything is ready doctor." a young man's voice.
"Good, then let us begin." the German accent.
Tak?
Ok, I've made my decision.
