Here's the scenario:
I'm looking for a new job. I see a well-known company sign on an office building near my apartment.
On a lark, I go to their website to see if they have any openings. On their "careers" page they have a short list of openings, and as well a general email address to send your resume to "because we're always looking for qualified individuals."
None of the jobs on the list look like anything I'm currently cut-out for. I send my resume to the general email box.
A day later, I come home to find a callback on my machine!: Ms. So'nso would like me to call her regarding a position! She said she received my resume, she gives her number, the whole bit. It's after 5pm by then, so I wait till the next day (today).
I call her, give her my name...and asks she me what position I applied for.
I tell her "oh, I had just sent in my resume to the general email address."
"Well, I mean, did you apply through Monster, or Hotjobs, or NWClassifides? What position were you applying for?"
"I went through your company website...and sent my resume to the general address that just...asked for them."
"Oh. I see what you did...well, I recruit for so many jobs. What's your background?"
"Consumer finance."
"Oh...I don't have any finance positions right now. Why don't you give me your last name, I'll look for your resume, and I'll call you back."
. . . .
YOU MORON! YOU CALLED ME!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, I didn't actually say that bit but...honestly.
If you wanted to talk to me about a job, actually went to the trouble of calling me to discuss something...and then forget who I am, that there was a job I was apparently qualified for that inspired you to ring me in the first place, and not even know how my resume reached your desk after I've told you...
Is this a company I would want to at all work for??
