NOTR is now a business. We are defined as a non-profit by the Federal government and the state of Washington, but not the city of Seattle.
We have an EIN (federal employer identification number)
We have a UBI (Washington State Unified Business Identifier)
We have an MBL (WA state Master Business License)
and are awaiting the City of Seattle Business License in the mail.
This means we have to report earnings and file tax returns.
This is done by the Secretary/Treasurer.
We are a 501c7 non-profit organization, defined as a Social or Recreational Club.
Some people have asked why we cannot be 501c3, and it is because our Primary purpose is not Charitable (or any of the other things on the list to qualify). Yes ECC does charity, but it is not the main purpose of NOTR.
The main purpose of NOTR is to provide support and services to its members and guests to gather and play Live Action Roleplaying Games.
As a 501c7, we sadly cannot offer tax deductions to you, our donors.
However, donations TO NOTR are not considered taxable income for the corporation, so we should not have to PAY taxes as long as all of our operating budget comes from donations.
This means we need to keep records of all the donations that come in, and work really hard to make sure we never have to charge for anything.
