Tears started to well up in Anthem's eyes the moment her mother departed the kitchen. She thought at first that maybe she had been wrong, that maybe her mom had never known the true nature of the macrame anklet she had given her so long ago. But the faint, oh so dashedly faint shadow of Glamour that still clung to her told a different story that only her Fae nature could understand.
She had been right. Her mother was a changeling.
Was.
She hurriedly brushed away a tear as she wondered how recently she had fallen Asleep. A couple years? A couple months?
And then the possibility she had been doing her best since her Crysalis not to think about; had she only just missed her in the time she had delayed getting back?
"it was about 6 months ago," she jumped, startled from her thoughts by the familiar voice behind her.
she huriedly wiped her eyes again and turned to face her father.
"just shortly after you left." He smiled, though his eyes hinted at a deep sorrow, and held out an arm as he approached to welcome his daughter into a much needed hug. She ran to him.
"It's good to meet you, finaly," he said, giving her a squeeze.

They sat on the ledge that encircled the hot tub just where it dropped off in a cascading waterfall to the small, but beautifully sculpted pool below. Dad had built it himself, and it had been her favorite spot as a child. Here they were revisiting it, and yet she couldn't help but notice as he handed her the frosty can of American Lager, that he really wasn't treating her like his daughter right now, but like an old war buddy or something.
"She'd been expecting it for some time, and honestly it was a pretty long run by some standards. The truth is though, the two of you never really meet. you always Crysalize in a precise succession. It's been that way countless generations. Two fae souls forever each others shadow in time rolling along through your mother's side of the family. Not always in a straight line, but close enough. As for your old man, I've just been holding on to look after your mother now and make sure she got to pass some messages on to you" He took a sip of his beer. She had been so focussed on her mother it had never occured to her that her father might too have been connected to her world. But here he was, a Kinain, and a veritable well of information.
"So why is it like that? I feel like I've felt this disapointment so many times before." She felt not so unlike a pouting child, as she said it.
"Know one knows really. at least no one I've ever met. There's plenty of legends though."
"I have legends?" she perked up a little in spite of herself.
"yup," he chuckled. "Minor ones. you're not world famouse or anything, but you're known. Liked for the most part. The 'Mercury Twins'. Epyc and Anthym."
"oh," she started, looking perplexed. "I thought my fae name would be something different. Eveyone was making a big deal about weather I needed to wait for a Saining and all that."
"Yeah", he laughed, realizing his faux paux. "Funny thing, that. You see it happens just about everytime, or so I hear, that the one of you who's awake will eventually nickname the other as a child without even realizing it. It just sorta comes out again and again until it sticks. I guesse after being so closely within reach of each other for so long you just know, or something."
"I've been spelling it wrong, haven't I?"
"Yeah," he nodded "that's usually how it goes."
Vague flashes of letters and missives with her name on it in various mediums...
"One more thing," Dad started, interupting the rememberance. "Grandma's coming over tonight. Make sure you talk to her. She's been Asleep herself for quite some time now, but she could probably tell you a bit about about your last time 'round. We'll talk more before you leave. I want to hear more about your trip too"
He stood up. Anthem followed suit.
"It's good to see you again kid" he hugged her, as the daughter who had left his home so many months ago. A big bearhug like only someone of Troll blood could do.
She watched him go, wondering about something to do with his advice to talk to her grandma that she couldn't quite put her finger on. So instead she dipped her finger in the water, feeling it flow over the tiles, and started tracing it along one of the rocks that formed the ledge where she sat.
A-N-T-H-\...She stopped, staring at the already evaporating letters on the warm stone for some time until they faded.
It didn't feel right.
She knew full well that the spelling was correct, but it didn't yet FEEL like hers to write.
Wait a minute...Grandma...
"Hey Dad? You're not saying...."
She thought she heard him stifle a laugh
