For once, Elaine was not totally bored by Court. She was annoyed, to be certain, but Seattle was a far more interesting place than the Queen's Court could ever hope to be.
She watched the discussions and appointments with curiosity, though she barely knew any of the people here. Except Lenka, of course. Lenka was the entire reason she'd even come up here. If she'd known she would receive such an improper, uncouth, downright rude reception from his people...
Well, no, she'd have come anyhow. She had to admit that to herself. But she would no longer take their attitudes in stride. This was not her land, to be sure, but at least some respect could be shown.
She paid close attention to who was promoted and who was demoted, who was appointed where. The Selkie's story bothered her, though she'd heard it before. She was wondering what, if anything, she could do to help--Gaia's creatures needed aid, regardless of their presence on land or sea--when Lenka swayed dangerously.
Then he was down, and some part of Elaine's mind, a part she was not at all used to, started screaming. Oh no oh no oh no not again I can't go through this again... be alright, please be alright. As the other members of the county rushed to aid their Count, Elaine knelt down to take his head in her lap. She couldn't think any further than that.
There was smoke, and Elaine pushed the fear away firmly. Some sort of amulet smoking... and then... "She's dead." And the Countess' mind filled with questions and possibilities. Something else to focus on but the fear.
The new feeling in her gut was not fear, not really. It was, instead, a very familiar sort of hardening. Whatever was happening, whomever was dead--and she had her initial suspicions--this would not be over quickly. She was a child of Falcon's blood, and a follower of Lady Fiona. She must be strong, and proud, and hide her weakness. Her people needed her, and she had a duty to fulfill.
