April 11th 1994
Early Morning
Helene was jerked awake by the sound of a high pitched cry coming from the front door. Normally, she would have turned over, covered her head with her pillow, and tried to go back to sleep. Sleep was very important to a seven year old. But this cry seemed to pierce her heart. So she scrambled from bed and opened her bedroom door.
From there she could see her Uncle Elton’s face over her mother’s shoulder. He seemed worried, and mom seemed pissed, but she went forward anyways. In Uncle’s arms was an adorable Metis newborn. She reached up a hand, touching his little wiggling foot.
Then she was out the door like a shot, running as fast as her little legs could carry her. She knew what she needed, from helping to raise that litter of puppies the year before. She found the toughest teat she could find, formula, and a small horse blanket, then raced back for home.
Elton and her mother were still arguing, but they stopped as she raced up. She wasn’t out of breath, but she did pause to place her treasures next to the big chair in the livingroom. Then she walked back to Elton, reaching for the bundle of Metis in his arms.
“What’s his name?” she asked boldly.
“Eris.” Was the soft reply.
Helene smiled and took the bundle back to the chair, sitting down and unwrapping him gently before wrapping him back up in the horse blanket, only tight enough to keep him from savaging her on accident. Then she brought the bottle to his lips, cooing softly as he latched on and began to suckle.
Helene’s next words were soft, so soft that the two now silently watching her could barely hear them.
“You’re home now, Eris. I’ll take care of you.”
