Helen paced the room, wings fluttering, lifting her feet half off the ground. LoJack, she thought. I’m going to LoJack every single fae in the city, I swear… How am I supposed to protect everyone if they keep getting kidnapped? By “everyone”, of course, she primarily meant Count Kara-Murza. Oh, and I need to visit all the major Freeholds and houses in the area. It took entirely too long to get to Baron VonStephan’s home, and what if Erzabeth hadn’t been in any shape to share a scry for the endpoint? She shook her head, frustrated. If they are going to insist on giving me this shiny gold brow-leash, I am going to have to make sure I have the tools to do my job… A fine and rotten job I’ve done so far!
She watched the preparations from across the room. I really wish I could go with Rene… But she didn’t say anything, though she dearly wanted to; for one, Rene’s choices made far too much sense. For two, she wasn’t sure that she could hold it together if she had to watch the Balor with their hands on her Count. For three, the odds were good that the Balor would take this opportunity to strike at one or more of the county holdings while attention was focused on the Count’s absence. But someone has to stay and guard the rear…several “someones”, actually, given the number of Freeholds in the county. So that’s what I’ll do. I’ll do what I can to help hold the Count’s realm together while Rene figures out how to get him back. Her wings fluttered more violently, lifting her entirely off the ground for a pair of paces. And if he gets himself killed again, I’m going to hunt his ghost down and haunt HIM! She took a deep breath, calmed, and her feet returned firmly to the ground. So now...I wait.
