Mat sits on the floor of the room. Aside from his open journal and his raven feathered quill, the room is empty. He presses the pen to the page and begins to write.
Good bye, Emerald County. I leave you for brighter lands. I know a lot of you will think that my departure is an act of cowardice. Feel free to. I doubt many of you will ever see me again. Any real reason I had to stay has departed or gone to places outside thoughts. My debt hasn't been paid, but as it was to a man who holds honor as nothing, I doubt he'll give a shit if I ditch out on it. Honestly, I don't anymore.
I wish you all the best. I doubt that under whatever leadership you are given the best will have any hope of occurring, but I wish it none the less. I give a few points of advice to help you live through your futures.
To those I held close: Get out if you can. There is nothing there to be salvaged. Between the surrounding lunatics and the controlling ex-nobles, the only hope there is to have is to become a puppet to those who thought to "lead us" in our struggle, or join the others in their insanity. I don't think any of you can accept those choices.
To those who thought I was worthless: Have your fun. Just know that in the final days, the things you do now won't matter much. They didn't then and they don't now. If you're smart you will die in a fire, it'd be best for all of us.
Specifically for Lenka Kara-Murza: Have fun in your County. Run it as you would an army. You did that well in the past. Well, to an extent. I won't be there to sneak up on you this time, so you can put that worry out of your mind. I'm kidding. You'll do a good job there, just make sure to not get captured or die anymore. I hear you only get so many tries in this existence.
To Erzabeth: I hope your children grow to be strong and have good lives. I will take your advice and worry about the Ailil that I don't see. To that end, I'll make it a point to flush out any Ailil around and tell them to get the fuck away from me. If they do not comply, I won't kill them, but I will make them wish that they listened to the command before thinking they could control me.
So again, I leave for greener pastures. Funny, I thought emeralds were
green. It seems that I missed the memo labeling them black.

Mat pulls the page out and grabs a few envelopes out from beneath the journal and starts to write out the destinations they are to be delivered to. One is the Seattle Freehold. Another is the Everett Freehold. The last two are addressed to Count Ulrim and Lady Anthym. He taps on his shoulders and smiles as the two ravens manifest. He hands two envelopes to each and tells them where he will be so they can return. Opening the window, he lets them loose. He then places the pen in the fold of the book and rises. Giving the room one last glace he whispers "Free at last" before closing the door.
