I'm sick to death of this constant shit flying around about "rules people" and "story people" or "ROLL-Players" and "Roleplayers". This is utter nonsense. The game we are all here to play is the cross between the two things. It is role-play, with a system to determine outcomes. If you are opposed to any system whatsoever, go improv freeform somewhere else.
What is more, the real issue with with these elitist pricks who seem to regard it as a cardinal sin to have ever opened a rulebook. [insert effete british accent] "Oh, you understand the RULES. Well you must be a terrible role-player then." BULLSHIT! I cannot grasp how the issue managed to become framed this way. For the entire time I have been roleplaying, I have been someone who likes to understand all the rules to the game I'm playing. I'll even admit to a streak of power gaming. However this does not mean that I'm a cheese monkey, rules whore, crack stacking freak who doesn't care about the story being told.
This game is amazing in the fact that knowledge of the rules isn't REQUIRED to play. Most games it is. But here, the game is kind enough to help out not just new players, but players who for whatever reason don't have a firm grasp of the rules. Whatever the reason, you should just be thankful that this is the kind of game where people are nice like that and you can get by without knowing the rules, instead of looking down on the people who are picking up your slack.
And I'm not talking about the people who don't get the rules, or even the people who for reasons of their own don't want to get the rules. I fully support that this game is nice and makes it work for those types. My objection is to the snob assholes who turn it into a status thing that they don't understand the game and try to split the game into "role-players" and "rules people" a distinction that CANNOT exist in any functional role-playing game setting. So assholes, read my text:
ROLEPLAYING ABILITY IS NOT MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE WITH KNOWLEDGE OF THE RULES!!!
I don't know how much clearer I can make this point. So the next time you want to feel better about yourself by being a stuck up prick and trying to divide the game to make yourself feel important, get your nose out of the air and into a goddamn rulebook. You might learn a thing or two.
One last major difference between me and some of these asshats:
I have the common courtesy to confine my rants to the rant board.
