Staff has determined that this is a further aspect of mechanics that can be abused that is not represented in rules anywhere in cannon.
As such, Staff will no long be approving Mastercrafted items for play. Current items are considered 'grandfathered'. This might change down the road, but I do not have much desire to go through every item card again.
Armors are listed in the book as having certain materials associated with them. Leather armor, for instance, sucks. Staff will no longer be approving 'variant' armors for play. If you want to make level 3 armor, that's a kevlar vest and needs to have those stated materials to make it. For flavor aspects, you can certain modify the PROCESS of making armor. For instance, if you really want to skin your friend and have that as a component of armor, that is certainly do-able. It will look somewhat grisly and cool. But you need to have a core of more durable materials.
Weapons are in much a similar boat. While one can certainly craft a gun from scratch, doing so out of untempered iron is foolish and will result in mechanical failure, less accuracy, etc.
I can easily see this leading to a stupidly complicated house rule system on how to make shit, and that seems... exhausting. So... here's Staff's opinion on that:
No crafting system.
That makes this largely arbitrary, I know, which I hate. But thems the breaks.
The next rational question to ask is: "If I don't have access to kevlar and composite plates, how do I get wicked good armor?" The answer is, you can't. Armor is broken down by two basic functions- A) how much area it covers and B) how well does it protect that area. If you're looking to make super awesome coverage armor, but archaic metals and such (like... say... classic plate armor), that represents a challenge. I won't be punishing you as much as I probably should for that, but it won't be a cake walk either.
For every 'step' of archaic you wish to go, you lower the effectiveness of the armor by 1 step while suffering the existing penalty for that coverage. So, riot gear made of archaic materials will likely provide 3 dice of protection at 3 dexterity penalty.
The same will be said of weapons. If you build a sword out of iron, or poorly tempered Steel (as represented by your Science score...), you will have less dice to swing in battle. The process will be the same. The less good your materials, the more dice you lose from the final product. Being a good crafter extends beyond the Craft skill.
I can hear the weeping already... my response is: FIND KINFOLK CAPABLE OF DEALING WITH THE MODERN WORLD. If you lack the social backgrounds to secure these things, you can't get them. Period. Find someone that can.
