V20 introduced a revised system for a number of powers attempting to re-balance them after two decades of play testing and based on the feedback of thousands of fans over that time.
Potence was one of the powers to receive a revision, and in this case, actually becomes less powerful overall. Potence today grants one automatic success on any Strength related challenge for every level of Potence you possess. Here is the text in V20 for Potence:
"Each dot that the vampire has in Potence adds one die to all Strength-related dice rolls. Further, the player can spend one blood point and change his Potence dice into an equal number of automatic successes to all Strength-related rolls for the turn. In melee and brawling combat, successes from Potence (either rolled or automatic) are applied to the damage roll results."
In other words, the passive benefit of Potence is cut roughly in half (especially in Mod-Dot) and you can replicate the effects of current Potence by spending 1 Blood Point per round you wish to have it.
Again, overall this is a less potent Potence, essentially adding a cost for some of its effect rather than it being totally free and always on before. The determination was that it was too good before, overall, pound for pound point for point.
I wouldn't mind seeing this in game. Vampire combat usually only lasts one single round, which isn't particularly dramatic, and this is part of the reason. If the idea is to tell dramatic stories, and that drama involves combat, I think slowing it down so there's time for a pitch and roll of combat isn't a bad idea.
Staff will hold a vote on 9/8 to see if the game wishes this rebalanced version of Potence to be used in game.
I'll leave this thead open for comments and questions.
