Combination Discipline/Discipline Technique Creation
The powers of the blood are mutable and throughout the ages new techniques are constantly being developed. Most of these take the form of combination disciplines, also called discipline techniques. These involve taking the knowledge of disciplines that the user already possesses and using the basic principles to an entirely new purpose, creating effects entirely separate from the original disciplines in question. Since these new powers are simply finding new ways to use the powers a character already possesses, any vampire may attempt to create his or her own new technique.
Before this process can even begin, the creator must submit and have approved a full text written version of the combination discipline they wish to create. This includes prerequisites and a complete description of the effects. Once the staff has signed off on the final version of the technique, the creation can begin.
Before beginning the creation process, the creator must already possess all of the necessary prerequisites to the combination discipline in question. The creation process involves experimenting with all powers involved so it would be impossible to begin without the prerequisites. A player can submit their concept for staff approval before their character has all the pre-requisites, however, but they will not be able to begin the creation process in character until that time.
Once all prerequisites are attained, the process can begin. The creation process is an extended Intelligence + Occult check with successive checks made weekly. The checks are made at a difficulty of 5 + the highest-level prerequisite involved. The creator must achieve a total number of successes equal to 5x the number of dots of in-clan discipline prerequisites + 7x the number of out-of-clan discipline prerequisites. Caitiff require a number of successes equal to 6x the total number of prerequisite discipline dots. A failure on any one of these checks does not ruin the process but does represent an error that must now be overcome. No progress is made that week and all further checks in the process are made at +1 difficulty. A botch on any one of these checks represents a catastrophic failure and ruins the entire process, requiring the caster to start again from the beginning. A botch also causes some kind of catastrophic mishap similar to botching a Thaumaturgy roll. As this is an extended check, Willpower cannot be spent on this process. In addition to the success requirement, there is a time component as well to represent appropriate testing to work out the final kinks in the process. A new combination discipline takes a minimum of one month per level highest-level prerequisite of the technique, even if the required successes are achieved before the minimum time.
Example 1: Gary Gangrel wants to create the combination discipline Flesh Wound (Clanbook Gangrel Revised p. 72). This requires Fortitude 2 and Obfuscate 3. The difficulty of the check is 8 (5 + 3 for the level of Obfuscate). Gary has an Intelligence of 2 and an Occult of 3 for a pool of 5. The pool is reduced by 2 for the difficulty 8 leaving 3 dice for each check starting Gary at 2 base successes. To complete his research Gary needs to achieve 31 successes (5x2=10 successes for the Fortitude and 3x7=21 successes for the Obfuscate). Assuming he tests average he will complete his research and have his new technique in 16 weeks.
Example 2: Alara Assamite and Terrence Tremere are both attempting to create Drink the Mind (Player’s Guide to the Low Clans p. 160). This requires Auspex 4 and either Quietus 5 or Thaumaturgy Rego Vitae 5, both disciplines for blood manipulation. Alara will use her mastery of Quietus while Terrence will rely on his Thaumaturgy. Both Alara and Terrence have an Intelligence of 4 and an Occult of 5. Terrence also happens to have access to an Occult Library of 5. Both will start at a difficulty of 10 (5 + 5 for the level of Quietus or Rego Vitae), but Terrence has the definite edge. Alara will require 53 successes (7x4=28 successes for the Auspex and 5x5=25 successes for the Quietus) while Terrence will only require 45 successes due to his clan’s affinity for both disciplines involved. Alara will have her dice pool of 9 reduced by 6 for the difficulty 10 leaving her with 3 dice to test with, starting her at 2 successes. Assuming she tests average she will complete her research in 27 weeks. Terrence adds 3 dice to his pool for the library and reduces his difficulty by 2, leaving him with a pool of 12 at a difficulty of 8. He reduces his dice pool by 2 for the difficulty 8, leaving him with 10 dice to test with, starting him at 5 base successes. Assuming he tests average, he will complete his research in only 9 weeks. Even though he completed the research so quickly, he still must finish testing all variables and thus the technique will be complete once the 5-month minimum period has passed.
Example 3: Patrick Pander is looking to create the combination discipline Soul Decoration (Clanbook Tzimisce Revised p. 72). This requires Vicissitude 3, Auspex 2, and Obfuscate 2. Patrick has an Intelligence of 3 and an Occult of 4 for a pool of 7. The difficulty of the check is 8 (5 + 3 for the level of Vicissitude). Patrick reduces hi pool by 2 for the difficulty 8 leaving him with 5 dice to test with, starting him at 3 base successes. Patrick is a Caitiff so he requires 42 successes to complete the process (6x3=18 successes for the Vicissitude, 6x2=12 successes for the Auspex, and 6x2=12 successes for the Obfuscate). Assuming he tests average he will complete his research in 14 weeks.
Note that while the examples given here for the sake of simplicity are already existing techniques in established material, you may either submit your own new powers for approval or attempt to "create" already existing effects from scratch.
Once created, you must keep a stamped printed copy of the new technique on you at all times at game to use the ritual so that anyone that wishes to may reference the text of the new power.
The extensive research process may limit the use of certain kinds of time consuming downtime actions, such as creating masterwork art, researching other rituals and powers, or patrols.
Combination Disciplines created with this system, unless otherwise stated in other printed material, are 7x the highest prerequisite Discipline.
