"This whole city's mad," Came the Southern drawl, the woman sitting criss-cross on the floor with bits and pieces of metal in front of her. "There's this sleeper - first of all. She doesn't know a thing, 'ah think she's a Sleeper. Ain't there some kinda' laws against sharin' with Sleepers? That Private Ah' seems ta' not care about any rules - ah' think he's more interested in.. ya' know."
The room was silent for a moment.
"That's not fair to say, ah' think about other things but that. But it's just lonely out here, ya' know?"
"Don't be gross, ah' wouldn't do that with my brother. Sure, he's attractive enough, but - ya have a dirty mind."
Nimble fingers began putting the pieces together, gears and springs and other bits began to come together. She flipped her goggles down over her eyes, the bright sparks flying as she began to weld the pieces together.
"Apparently no one can figure out tha' rules. Ah' mean, Ah'm not the sharpest tool in tha' shed, but even ah' understand not ta' do anythin'.. ya' know, bad in their fancy buildin'. Their door doesn't work right, their chair have souls - this city, ah' swear."
The shape began to form a small clock, small enough to be a watch. "Ah' know, ah' know. Ya' canna' come with me, ah' haven't asked about their policy on that. Ah' don't wanna' wear out mah' welcome, ya' know? There is this real handsome gentleman there - he sounds like he's from mah' neck o' the woods, ya' know?"
She gave a little, awkward titter as she put the back of the piece she was working on over the gears inside.
"Yeah, maybe.. Ah' dunno, we'll see."
