There was music coming from the church, the sunlight broke through the apple trees that grew in the gardens, and there were children running and laughing all around. The whole settlement was there, at least those that remained waiting and hoping that the soldiers would return safely from war.
She put that scary thought aside, this was her day and her whole family was here. Her father was smiling proudly at her from the opposite seat in the carriage. "It's almost time my dear, how are you feeling?" Her smile must have reassured him because he noticeably relaxed and reached out to take her hands. "I'm so proud of you, sweet Carmenia."
"Thank you father, and I am feeling...joyous. Everyone is here! I can see from here that Jacob has brought the new baby, and Mary is practically glowing with motherhood. I'm just so happy they could all come."
Her father nods and leans over to kiss her cheek. "He will be good to you I think, a good match that one."
She nods and turns to look back out at the window, wanting to take it all in, the beauty of her wedding day. Will all her family around her nothing could make this day more special.

How long had she been stuck in this room? Were they going to feed her? She sniffed back her tears and lay back down on the thin cot. It accounted for the largest piece of furniture in the room. Other than that there was a single toilet, an old towel, and ratty brown wool blanket. I should have run out of tears by now, she thought, no one is coming to save me, she curls up into herself, the dreams aren't real, this is a nightmare I'm living in.
A loud knock pulls her out of her melancholy, but fresh tears have started to roll down her cheeks. She doesn't answer, and she doesn't even move to look. The thoughts start rolling back in, it doesn't matter, they are likely going to simply leave me to die in here, I'm not actually wanted, I was just a response to an insult. As her thoughts turn darker she starts to sob. She is oblivious to the sound of the door creaking open and the heavy booted foot steps.
"What the fuck are you crying about?" It was him, what did Silias say his name was, Haden, no Hadrian. He sounded angry, she turned her head slightly to look at him, but didn't answer. "I said, what the fuck are you crying about?" As he asked a second time he got closer and closer to her face. This time she simply met his gaze as though he were an idiot for asking a question with such an obvious answer. After a moment his expression softens and he eases into a crouch beside the cot. With a song of sincerity in his voice, "Do you miss those high and mighty Ventrue?"
The look of concern on his face makes her wonder if he might just let her go, if she could appeal to some kind of humanity in him. "Yee...eess, yes," she manages to croak out, coughs and,"they are my family, I love them, please just let me go, I'll do anything, please?"
"Family huh?" She nods.
"Love you say?" Nods again.
"Anything?" His look of interest lulls her in.
"Yes, I'll do anything!"
Hadrian sits her up in the bed and as he stands his expression becomes something strange, something dark, something cruel. He swings his fist at the wall of her cell and it crumbles as though he has smashed a cracker, the anger returning to his face. "You will never go back, you want love and family?! We'll show you love and family!"
Sounds of pain escape her lips before the pleas for mercy even had a chance as he reaches down and grabs her by her matted red hair and started dragging her out of the cell. She couldn't pay attention to his muttered complaints over the sound of her own shouts and the feeling of her skin being grated off against the rough stone floor of wherever she was.
Their pace begins to slow as Hadrian drags her closer to a set of double doors, his muttering has ceased and the sound of raucous sinister laughter practically banged on the doors from the other side to come out. In a flourish Hadrian pushes open both doors and he tosses her into the middle of the brightly lit room. She winces in pain, quickly moves to right herself, and move the hair out of her eyes, blinking at the sudden light.
Surrounding her are strange faces, all grinning at her, they soon turned to look at Hadrian whom raised his hands in the air and looked right at her. "This girl, this wanna be Ventrue bitch, longs for family, we're family right?" He is met with claps, roars, and hollars of agreement. "She also longs for love, who thinks we can show her that?" The laughter and shouts were malicious. "I promised you all a little fun tonight didn't I?" More applause, "then lets have at it!" And he points to her as four women rush over her, grabbed her up, dropped her on a hard table, and started ripping her clothes off.
No one listened as she screamed for help, no one slowed down as she begged for mercy, and no one walked away as she cried out for what seemed like hours as they each took at turn at her. Some just bit her, most raped her, one took a chunk of her hair, and lastly Hadrian appeared beside her holding a red hot metal brand. "This is so you won't forget, forever, you belong to us, we are your family now," and he leans down to ear and whispers, "and we love you very much." Then he places the brand on her hip and all that was left was the pain before everything went black.

They all stood in the church as the lovely couple said, 'I do', then everyone went outside to cheer the newly weds on into their carriage. As they exited the church Carmenia's father was congratulating her new husband Paul. Carmenia hugged Paul's father and mother and as they hugged, Paul's father says, " We are your family now too," and his mother adds, "and we just love you! Welcome dear!" They hug again in a world filled with smiles and laughter. Paul takes Carmenia's arm and kisses her to the tune of cheers from the loved one's gathered before they set off to their carriage.
With tears of joy in her eyes she waves good bye to her beloved family as the horses pull them away. "Sleep my dear, we have a bit of ride before we reach our new home."
"Yes dear husband," She settled back onto the seat and rests her head on a pillow excited for the dreams of more family yet to come, because after all, nothing is more important than family.
