Seattle, The State of Washington
1889
One cannot adequately express, in words, the reality of our surroundings; but I shall give it the very best in elbow grease that I may dredge up.
Seattle is a ruin of a city, simply put. We attended court last eve, and during our excursions through the city, we were able to see firsthand the rape and pillage that the fire has brought to the place, as surely as any army would have been able to do. I am struck, at times, by the comparison that a natural disaster has, to the destruction brought on by an invading force into the homeland of those it is attempting to subjugate. Philosophically, one could argue that humankind, and by its existence Kindred as well, are no more than a force of nature sweeping across the land, like a tornado or a brush fire. But I digress.
Court was filled with the usual mix of lords, ladies and jackanapes, though 'twas oft that one could not be readily distinguished as to what class one belonged. Madame and I added a necessary and distinct touch of class to the place, and while there were some improperly leveled glances at Madame's...unusual appearance, those who were expected to be at the peak of society's graces certainly acted like it.
(there was one unfortunate encounter with an uncouth savage who referred to himself as 'the mouth', but I shan't waste more ink describing the utterly ridiculous buffoon.)
I was able to translate for milady in key circumstances that required my customary touch, and while I know that she has to play the part of stern regnant in public, I can tell that she is pleased with my instrumental mores.
One interesting fellow of note is that Lasombra chap, Christiano. I was unable to record his entire name, the echoes in the meeting hall were positively dreadful, but I feel positive that we will have more enlightening interactions with him, and I feel only the smallest kernel of pity for those who cross him based on the color of his skin.
Another intriguing fellow was an American, a genuine cowboy with a drawl and a manner of walking which could only be described as positively Colonial; it thrilled me in small ways to have him address Madame and myself, and he was far more cordial and well-mannered than I would have expected an American to be. His name is John Henry something-or-other, I will have to remind myself to carry a notebook in the future upon which to record all pertinent information. One cannot be found to be wanting, when the proper time for a specific name or a choice morsel of information should be rolling off the tongue; not if one wants to be revered.
Madame was selected to head the formation of a Primogen gathering, and she performed admirably, pleasing the Prince to such an extent that his Highness granted her reward.
Well, I have been tasked with establishing Madame's dwelling arrangements, which I shall be spurring myself onto with great haste, forthwith.
Cheerio, and skip the gutter!
I closed up my journal, replacing it in the small chest that was its home, and removed the spectacles from my eyes. A finger and thumb massaged the aching bridge of my nose, while I contemplated the most important things that any man in my position could possibly contemplate at this hour: what methods would I employ tomorrow evening, to make certain Milady's eyes were greeted by the night, as they opened from her slumber? What methods, indeed.
I will allow myself 4 hours of sleep, and then, I will begin the process of acquiring everything for Madame's new
home.
It appears that we will be staying in America for some significant amount of time.
