It'd been over 20 years since I'd attended a vampire gatherin alone, and I'd be liein if I said I wasn't still nervous. But, I believed that there were, even some of their kind that I could consider friends, and 20-so years of establishment in the city gave me some confidence even as I entered into the lion's den.
The gatherin was still quiet. Only-a couple-a the key players (like the Prince) observin folks as they walked in. I sat down at one-a the tables, hopin to remain unnoticed. There was one lady in, what looked to be a wool shawl came over an' askt when the Prince might be granting audience. Well, poor thing; I didn't know, nor did I really care.
Then Miss Elizabeth Walking-Bear came over and we got to chattin. She askt where Vincent was, an' I splained to her that he'd gone outta town to acquire some more merchandise, as tastes have been changin. She askt if I'd come across any-a the other Toreador, or if I'd seen the host-a the party.
Well, as the host was my friend, the Tremere Doctor, I'd been lookin for a sight-a him too. She showed me a carvin she'd done as a gift to the thank the host. It was a beautiful turtle, with lotsa lovely Native American designs on its shell. Upon first sight-a the doctor, both she and I went to thank him for the lovely event.
The Doctor inquired as to the whereabouts of Mr. Vincent... then proceeded to give me permission to be there as long as I didn't ruffle any feathers-a the upper court. Well, as I had no intention of rufflin any feathers, I didn't argue to his request... it wasn't until later that I realized what the undertone had been....
There was a new Toreador in town... name-a Avalon. He came in with three mortals in his wake, and the females were wearing what looking like dog-collars. That alone was enough to set me off... but... Miss Elizabeth called me over an' suggested to him that I'd be able to help his mortals out, as I "belonged" to Mr. Vincent. "Belonged"? I don' belong to Mr. Vincent, I'm a business partner. Avalon asked for my assistance in showing his mortals their place as one of "my status". My status? Boy you better watch what you say or you might find your home on fire in the middle of daylight. My status...
So they "sho'ed" us of to the corner like unwanted pets. I had to inform one of his mortals that it was ok to speak with me because, while I might be older (and I wasn't sure), but I was still livin and breathin just like her. I did let her know, however, that should she be in the market for a new Master, she was a very lovely woman and she'd make a fine prostitute. No shame in it.
The four-a us got to talking, wonderin about the upper court and whatnot, just as the Prince called all-a his upper court to sit in audience. I was dismayed to see that the Doctor was one of the court... and I was furious to see Avalon sittin among them, whether he pulled his chair to the side or not.
The Prince issued a challenge, I guess. Not entirely sure as I couldn't really understand him through his thick accent and how far away we were. But Avalon came up to us and askt ME to excuse them... oh if he only knew that my reaction of leaving was more outta shock that he'd even asked ME to move, than out of any real respect or observance of "my status".
He then left with his ghouls. I followed them, until just outside the door when they disappeared down the streets.
I returned to just inside, but I was furious. Such a rage flowin through my veins as I did not know I had within me. It took Miss Elizabeth comin over and remindin me that we were in public and that was how many-a the folks around me DID view one of my talents. I hadn't had it flaunted so openly before... Vincent was kind an' generous. Miss Elizabeth seemed to tolerate, even if she didn't respect... and the Doctor was generous... however... when I expressed my dealins with the Doctor, it was suggested to me that, perhaps, he was only genteel in private, because he had scolded Avalon on the outspokenness of his ghouls...
...I was beyond knowin what to think. I suppose I shoulda seen it comin, as my first thoughts on him had been that he was slimy...
I suppose one just doesn't know what to feel or think about vampires... guess they're not referred to as leeches for nuthin....
