Amelia stood precariously at the top of the ladder, attempting to reach the last corner of the wall with her paint brush. The lamp light flickered as the door behind her was noised open by Rusty. He padded into the room behind her, stretched and laid down. His eyes stared up at her pitifully as she worked.
She finished painting the wall, and climbed down from her perch. She dropped her paint brush into the bucket and slowly spun to survey her work. It had only taken her a year, but she was finally finished with the last room in the hotel.
Rusty let out a quiet wine. She snapped her fingers at him, and he stopped immediately. She ignored him for a few more minutes before placing her hand on his head and scratching. "Good boy."
Amelia picked up her paint can and turned to leave. Standing silently in the doorway was Walter.
"Are you almost done?" He asked.
"It's the last room in this building." It was a non-answer, and she knew it. She moved towards him to exit out into the hallway. He continued to stand there, forcing eye contact.
"It's not what I asked. Are you planning on refinishing all of them?"
"I was planning on it. Yes." She pushed past him into the hallway.
"Amelia."
She stopped at her name and turned. "Yes, Walter?"
"People haven't seen you upstairs in almost two years." He sauntered towards her and rubbed the corner of her frilled jacket. "You're out of date."
"When I'm done..."
"When you're done, the paint will be cracking in the first building and you'll come back to fix it. I know you." He said.
"If I don't do it, then who else is going to?" She asked. She looked away. Embarrassed somehow by her need to work.
"It's not like we don't have time." He looked down at her until she looked back up at him. "You're not on a deadline."
"I know that."
"Then come back upstairs."
"I will... I just..." She stammered.
"You. Have. Time." Walter cut her off.
"Alright. I'll reschedule the work to go be a proper lady." Amelia turned to leave. "Come on, Rusty. Let's go see what's 'up to date.'"
