Your Grace Prince Bastion Orleans, Respected Harpy Mathias Eberhart, and Sheriff Angrim,
What follows is a report on the death of Primogen Walter Eddington written by my hand.
During the small gather on the sixth of December, the late Walter Eddington was sent several media text messages picturing the severed feet of his property. This ghoul has been in Edington's employ for some time and represented a singular investment in time and effort. Thus, he contacted the Chancelor, Miss Amelia Devlin-Price, the Ravnos and me to assist him in investigating and retrieving his property, if possible. Given that that night's Gather was small and many of its attendees were engaged in a childish game called "Cards Against Mortals," I felt confident that my deputy-in-training, Dale West would be able to watch over its occupants and inform me of any issues.
Edington sent query messages back to the sender of the images and received an address and a somewhat odd ransom request for his presence. As the Ravnos had the ability to send her awareness to other locations through some mystical means I am not aware, she was tasked to scout the address and report what it was she found. After a few moments, the Ravnos returned to consciousness and informed us that the location in question held several mortals hung and bound by barbed wire, all without their feet.
We made this investigation while still in the parking lot of the gathering and, based on the descriptions, concluded that it was likely an ambush of the Sabbat. The Chancellor sent the Sheriff a message, requesting his assistance in the matter. The initial response we received was if a Tradition was not violated, it did not fall under his responsibility. When the Chancellor clarified that this was a Sabbat ambush and that such a thing was, among other things, a violation of the Tradition of Hospitality and Domain, he informed us that it was "not his problem," presumably continuing to play a childish game rather than investigating a genuine concern by several well respected members of our community.
We traveled to the location and parked our vehicles several blocks away from the house. Our plan was to utilize the Ravnos' mystical ability to create an illusion of Eddington approaching and knocking on the door of the house. Then, if that failed to draw out the ambushers, travelling to a window that opened into the basement and toss in an illusionary Molotov cocktail to convince the occupant or occupants to flee the basement where we waited in counter-ambush.
When the illusion of Eddington at the door and the Molotov fire failed, we contacted the mortal authorities. If we were mistaken and the torturers were merely humans, it would be best simply for them to address the issue. At this point, the Ravnos and Miss Devlin-Price left.
However, when paramedics and fire rescue arrived moments later, those who entered first feel through the floor at the entrance and, immediately, the area was covered in mystical darkness of the sort I am familiar.
We witnessed one of the fire rescue engines being tossed out of the darkness and before we could make our escape while made invisible, Eddington suddenly became visible. I know not why or how the ambushers were able to force him out of his considerable invisibility, but he was immediately set upon by tendrils of this darkness. Before I could react, he was rendered to ash. From my knowledge of such things, an accomplished warrior as Your Grace has chosen in the Sheriff would have had the ability to both withstand and combat this darkness.
The Chancellor and I then made our escape, avoiding whatever mystical ability our adversaries had to pierce invisibility.
Immediately following, it is my understanding that the Chancellor contacted the Sherrif once more and that, while I was protecting the Masquerade as is my charge, he and the Sheriff set the house ablaze.
Walter Eddington was a kindred of considerable knowledge, skill and presence within the Court and our society has lost a tremendous member and asset. I will spend many nights wondering that had those called heeded their charge given them by Your Grace and performed their duties and due diligence rather than dallying in a wasteful entertainment, would Primogen Eddington be able to join us in celebration on the thirteenth.
This concludes my report of this night.
Respectfully,
Cristiano Chansano Adolyewe Kemnebi Orisha, Keeper of Elysium.
