Kid Scouts the Focus of Seattle-wide Civil Services Probe
S. Hargraves – Civil Child Protective Services Investigators are working to identify the students of a homeless man suspected to have been providing young boys with dangerous objectives for dubious merit badges over the weekend by a group of social workers throughout the greater Seattle area.
The kid scouts of Seattle were found espousing their intent to go ‘monster hunting', across the Seattle area. Several other associated children may be involved, investigators say, as well as the homeless man and self named ‘youth pastor’ known as “The Skipper”.
There was no positive identification of this potentially dangerous rhetoric made as of Monday morning, and witnesses said it was difficult even to say whether the social worker’s probes into the many Seattle area scout troops would ultimately increase the safety of the children involved. There was also no information on how long ago the incidents of monster hunting with homemade weapons occurred.
“It’s a difficult process. There are many troops in the area and they are all spread out," said Sasha Ugisala, a parent who was traveling with Scout Troop 587 out of Everett when a social worker sat in on their troupe meeting on Saturday.
Ugisala said the group had been scheduled for a hike in the Mill Creek area, but cold weather sent them south instead. The social worker, who declined to be named in this article, met the troupe at the parking area near their hike site.
“We try to accommodate the Scouts as much as we can. We don’t want to be disruptive, but it’s a priority that we keep these kids safe and explain how dangerous these flights of fancy can be."
Vernon Darter, public information officer with the King County Social Services Office, said the incidents with ’Skipper' were still under investigation early Monday, although no details were yet available. More information should be available later in the month, he said.
