The hard metal plank under him is cold. Dawn will be coming soon and he should get ready to sleep as they do. The outside of his body is at rest while inside there's an argument is brewing.
“You should do it, it’s for the best.” The soothing voice purred.
“Why? She’s not under his sway anymore she should start improving and finding her way.”
“It’s too late, she’s already lost. Who’s going to guide her you?”
The monster shrugs on the plank “Why not me? I’m a great mentor.”
Laughter comes from his Beast “Don’t you recall you’re a shit elder? They even said it to your face.”
“That was his control over her, she has promise.”
“She has less control than you do, if you frenzied as often as she does they would have put you down.”
“… True, I’m surprised they haven’t yet.”
“They will when you stop being useful, she’s just going to speed that up.”
“Fine, You’re right of course… How should I do it?”
“Well you have options, bind her leave her on the roof. Chop her into bits… sadly she’s so young there’s a body to dispose of.”
“I have someone who does that for me so that’s not a problem.”
Opening his eyes the Monster mutters “Fine” and gets off the metal bed. He walks across the naked room grabbing an axe hanging on the cement wall. Turning the wheel to open the door he steps out into the common room.
He stands shirtless in the hatchway, horrible scars make a map across his body some from before embrace others aggravated wounds that never quiet fully stitched together. Inside his head the Beast whispers “You can do this. You kill all the time this is no different…”
“No this is different, she’s not an enemy.”
“She’s not a friend, she’s planning on killing you. You've been told that.”
“She can’t kill me.”
“That’s right because we’re killing her first.”
Slowly and quietly he moves across the haven till he’s standing in front of her door. As his hand reaches out for the door a small voice in his mind is crying. “You’re killing me, please stop killing me.”
The Monster freezes like a child caught sneaking a taste of cake. “But, she’s a threat… I have to..”
“You’re killing me” the small child says with tears in his eyes.
His eyes, his deep grey-blue eyes.
“Goddamnit” The man says and heads back to his room. Closing the door and throwing the axe hard enough it embeds into the wall. The steel plank groans as he throws himself on it staring back at the plain grey ceiling.
“Don’t listen to him” The Beast growls, irritated and pacing.
“He’s right.”
“She’s going to kill you, you know that.”
“Let her try. At least it will be in self-defense and not murdering her in her home.”
The Beast just growls.
He can feel the sun rising even if he can’t see it. The death like sleep dragging him back to the grave of the day. The very last thing he hears is the whisper quiet “Thank you” from the Child.
Then nothing.
