I pushed the hood from my brow and looked up at the manor. How well my lover had done in my absence. Not that I should be suprised.
The crumpled paper crinkled in my hand, he sounded so sure he had the correct house.
'How selfish a little girl you are, that you'd ruin the life of a man who offers you nothing. You'd rip him away from the life he has made, the children he has raised.' His voice echoed in my ears. His smirk the warning I refused to heed.
My trembling knees bent and I stepped up the walkway. My hand didn't waiver this time as I grasped the knocker and slammed it against the door.
'Hello? Can I help you?'
How long had I been staring at him. It wasn't him, why wasn't it him.
'I. I um. I'm looking for Romio. Romio Rossellini.' I hunched over hands shoved in my pockets. I shuffled my feet against the door frame.
The man look me up and down and shook his head. 'I'm sorry dear there is no one here by that name.'
Why was he lying? He was in there, I knew he was in there!
I shoved against the door pushing him to the floor. I rushed towards the stairs screaming his name. David's hands grasped me before I could grab the banister. His arm around my waist the other firmly held my head back against his chest. Robert breached the doorway wrapping himself around my legs. The beast stirred as they turned me towards the door.
'Amani my dear, it's time you get some sleep.' Her hand touched the end of my braid. My eyes flit shut as she turned towards the man on the floor. 'Please excuse my cousin....'
My body tensed amongst silk sheets. I could tell by the sway of the bed we had left port. He was gone long ago, and I had overstayed my welcome in Chicago. The only person who couldn't admit it was me.
