The scene is warm. The room has been artificially heated to just above typical comfortable conditions. Subject Alpha 0049 is strapped to a bed with a machine monitoring her heart and brain functions. A loose set of tubing settles over her nose, as one might see in a dentist office. She has been cleaned from her ordeal and fed, but her diet has been strictly monitored for low-protein content. Her eyes look around the room slowly, blurry from her trials. The door to the small room opens, and an older gentleman with a ready smile enters with a clipboard under his arm.
(Excerpts from an interview)
Dr. Sven- (addressed to microphone) Subject Alpha Zero-Zero-Four-Nine interview three. Subject has been administered six ounces of purified grain alcohol approximately forty-five minutes ago. Sleep has been restricted since her recovery, as well as her diet restricted to low-protein portions. Other amenities have been provided upon request. Nitrous-Oxide currently (sound of valve turning) administered at 70/30 ratio. (Sounds of someone settling into a chair and papers rustling). Good evening, Abigail. Can you hear me?
Alpha 0049- (incoherent sounds with positive inflection)
Dr. Sven- How are you feeling tonight?
Alpha 0049- I’m… goooooddd…
Dr. Sven- I am very pleased to hear you say that. I understand that earlier you were under some duress?
Alpha 0049- I was?
Dr. Sven- I was led to believe so. I’m very pleased to hear you are better. Are you ready to begin?
Alpha 0049- Ok doctor.
Dr. Sven- I want you to close your eyes, Abigail. I want you to picture your body as you lay on the bed and see each of your muscles, can you do that?
Alpha 0049- (incoherent sounds with positive inflection)
Dr. Sven- That’s very good my dear. We’re going to start with your feet, ok? Picture all of the muscles in your feet and tell them ‘Feet, relax now’. Feel your tension slip away as the muscles relax and go limp. Then we move up to your shins and say ‘shins, relax now’. Picture the crisscrossed muscles going limp and all your tension flowing away. Now your calves. ‘Calves, relax now.’ Feel how the hours of walking you’ve done drift away as they just melt into the bed. How does that feel, Abigail?
Alpha 0049- Goooood….
Dr. Sven- You’re doing so well, my dear. I’m very proud.
Alpha 0049- Thank you, doctor.
Dr. Sven- Now we are going to move to your knees. They work so hard for you, but now it’s time for them to relax. ‘Knees, relax now.’ Say it in your mind, and feel how all the weight they bear just fades away and they melt to nothing. Next are your lovely thighs. Feel all of the powerful muscles there? Feel how hard they work for you. But now, they just need to relax. Say to them ‘thighs, relax now’. Feel the tension drift away as they go lax and melt into the bed. Its comfortable now, isn’t it?
Alpha 0049- (incoherent noises with positive inflection, softer than before)
Dr. Sven- Think of your hips. All the work your hips do. Tell them to relax, Abigail. ‘Hips, relax now.’ Feel the tension just melting away. And now your back. Powerful muscles hold you up all day long, pulling this bone to that, keeping you upright and walking. They’ve worked so hard for you, it’s time for a break. Tell them with your mind to relax. Feel the tension drifting off. See each muscle going limp from your command. Feel yourself melt into the bed more and more with each muscle you release. Now your stomach. You never think of these muscles, but they help you walk and run and eat; so important to movement. They’ve worked so hard, Abigail. Tell them to relax now, and let that tension go. Feel yourself going limp and letting go.
Alpha 0049- (incoherent noises with a positive inflection, soft)
Dr. Sven- You’re doing so good, my dear. So very good. (Sounds of valve being adjusted and writing on paper). Now think of your shoulders. They say we keep the weight of the world on our shoulders, and we certainly feel that with our stress. They work so hard for you, but it’s time for them to relax. See the muscles, tell them ‘Shoulders, relax now’. Feel them going limp and falling into the bed. It’s ok; it is safe to relax here. You can release your fears and trust me to carry them for you. Let your shoulders relax. Now move down your arms. Each muscle of your arm. Feel them relaxing as you tell them to relax. First the top of your arm, then your elbows, then your forearms. All the work they do, a nice break is a good reward. They are going limp and melting into the bed. Now your hands. Your hands do all your tasks during the day. They write and hold and pray and play. But now, tonight, we’re just going to let them relax. All those dozens of little muscles that make every intricate motion work, feel them relax and go limp. You don’t need your hands right now. You just need to relax.
(20 seconds of relative silence broken by deepening breathing)
Dr. Sven- Are you still with me, Abigail? How do you feel?
Alpha 0049- I feel nice.
Dr. Sven- Good girl; I’m very pleased with your progress. Now we move to your neck. It holds your head up all day; the seat of you. But it can relax now, and let the world march on. Feel the powerful muscles of your neck letting go, your head relaxing back into the pillows. Feel the weight of the world drift away. Now to your scalp, let it tingle and release, forget that it’s there. You don’t need a scalp right now. Feel yourself floating. And your face last of all, the physical manifestation of yourself. Faces are so intimate. Feel each muscle that gives you a smile or a frown or sign of despair; feel each of them relax in turn. Feel yourself drift. Drift and relax. Sink deeper into the bed. Feel just pleasant feelings of relaxation. I want you to remember this place, Abigail. When I tell you “It’s time for you to relax”, I want you to close your eyes and find this calm place. I want each of your muscles to relax, and I want you to sink into the bed. I want you to melt away to nothing; feeling the world pass over you, not affecting you. Float like this for a time, Abigail, and we’ll go for a walk soon.
(Spoken into microphone in a soft whisper)- Subject Alpha zero-zero-four-nine has proven receptive to suggestion, and placing her in this altered states of consciousness has proven to be easy as time has passed. Captivity had already done some of this, the extent of which is still unknown. Once subject is fully conditioned, we’ll explore the possibility of altered or missing memories. Her true past is still something of a mystery, including her name and background. Fascinating, really.
(Louder and to the subject)- Abigail, I want you to keep your eyes closed and listen to my words very carefully. I want you to picture yourself on a vast and endless plain. I want you to feel the gentle rustle of the breeze on your face. I want you feel the warmth of a distant sun on your shoulders. On this endless plain there is nothing except a door. Each door is unique to the individual; this is *your* door. What does your door look like, Abigail?
Alpha 0049- (voice muffled and slightly thick) It’s… wood. Red. Green borders. There’s a… knocker on it with a bird face. A gold handle.
Dr. Sven- Very nice! Your door sounds perfect for you. I want you to walk to that door; it won’t be far. It will open for you, but you know that this wouldn’t open for anyone else. The door leads to all of your secret places. It leads to the depths of your mind. The place where you hide all your secret dreams, wants and desires. You’re subconscious. Inside the door are stairs, stairs that lead down. Your stairs might be wood or stone, but they’re yours and familiar. Start to walk down the stairs, Abigail, step as I could them. One, two, three, four, five, with each step you take, you fall deeper asleep. The world above you and below you starts to disappear. You can’t feel your body anymore, and why would you want to? Six, seven, eight, nine, ten. You can’t hear anything but my voice. The room your body is in doesn’t exist anymore. Your body is meaningless. You’re a drifting fragment of thought, nothing more. Eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen. All you hear is my voice. All you feel is nothing. Sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty. Let my voice guide you down, deeper and deeper into your own thoughts. There is nothing now, just my voice and your thoughts. No barriers or distractions. Twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-three, twenty-four, twenty-five. Each step pulls us closer to your hidden place. Each step brings us closer together. Twenty-six, twenty-seven, twenty-eight, twenty-nine, thirty. The hallway down is pleasant. You can begin to see a light at the bottom that lead to the greater recesses of your mind. Thirty-one, thirty-two, thirty-three, thirty-four, thirty-five. Deeper within you. My voice and your thoughts. We’re starting to merge as you fall deeper away from your body. Thirty-six, thirty-seven, thirty-eight, thirty-nine, forty. The further your mind travels from your body, the more my voice and your voice become one. My voice becomes your thoughts. You can see what I speak. You can feel what I instruct. Forty-one, forty-two, forty-three, forty-four, forty-five. The view below, past the stairs is blurry, but you can trust me to guide you. Deeper you fall, more relaxed with each step. More centered with each step. Forty-six, forty-seven, forty-eight, forty-nine, fifty. You are in a garden now. A garden that is your mind. Here is where you can make long term changes to your own thoughts. Your garden is inviting and pleasant. Each thought you’ve had is a tree or bush or blade of grass. Here, all your memories can be found hiding in the leaves. Everything you’ve ever done or seen or known is stored here. Your body is far away. It doesn’t matter anymore. Only my voice and your thoughts matter.
(Faint sound of someone shifting and standing from a chair, followed by a sharp slapping sound)
Dr. Sven- Can you feel anything in your meaningless body right now?
Alpha 0049- (muffled and slowly spoken) No…
Dr. Sven- Good, I’m pleased. I want you to sit here for a moment, in your garden. I want you to listen and be comfortable. In this garden there is a chalkboard. Can you see the chalk board?
Alpha 0049- (muffled and slowly spoken) Yes. It’s green.
Dr. Sven- Good. Next to this chalkboard is a piece of chalk. Things you write here become real. They become your thoughts. They become your whole world. I want you to pick that piece of chalk up and I want you to write on that board. Write ‘I trust Doctor Sven’. I want you to write in the biggest letters possible. Underline that. The board will grow to write more things on it. Next I want you to write ‘I am meaningless’. Write this again…. And again…. Big letters. Next, we’re going to write ‘Doctor Sven does very important work. I must help with this work. Doctor Sven does very important work. I must help with this work.’
(Sounds of quiet sipping and gentle cough)
Dr. Sven- Abigail, can you read your board to me, please?

It’s probably old and gnarled. Maybe it’s big, or maybe it’s small. I want you to see this tree clearly. And then I want you to cut into the bark. Cut a whole, and into that whole I want you to project my face. I want you to make that tree understand that my face is special. Can you do that?
