Impounded Car Explodes in Ballard
An abandoned car seized by the Seattle Police Department exploded on Tuesday, Aug 18 at the impound and storage lot where it was being held in Ballard. The explosion destroyed the car and damaged many other vehicles. One employee, who was examining the vehicle when the explosion occurred, was killed.
Police and firefighters arrived at the scene around 2 p.m. following multiple reports of explosion, fire, and smoke. The ensuing fire from the explosion was brought under control within an hour, preventing its spread to the rest of the lot. One employee, who was in the office at the time said, "It's a shame, but we are really lucky the firefighters showed up so quickly; if they hadn't, the fire could've spread and made this a lot worse." Overall damage from the incident is projected to be over $100,000 with much of the damage falling on the owners of the damaged vehicles.
