The night sky was clear with millions of stars winking overhead. It had been a tough day of finals for Leilani, feeling the pressure of being the only woman in the program swimming at night when it was cooler was the only release she had.
She has always been a water baby, so her mother would tell her. Even at a young age, her mother would say it was always an epic battle to get her out of the water. Leilani was like her mother that way, headstrong and not afraid of a fight if she felt she was in the right.
Not far away a pack swam in the black waters. A large shiver of sharks swam, swimming around the leader, the not shark was large as a shark and could swim as fast as any of them. They all caught the scent in the water and headed towards the prey.
Swimming at night was her favorite thing to do. The world was quiet other than the lapping of the waves on the beach. When you looked up it looked like the sky was a sea of stars. It was so peaceful… then something bumped up against her. Coming back to the moment she looked around and saw she was surrounded by sharks. Sharks love to hunt at night by never in this part of the water.
Kamohoalii had watched her swim many times over the years. His beast wanted her, his heart wanted her. After many years he finally found his Kalei, his shiver sensed his anticipation and became excited, none would touch her because he forbade it years ago but they wanted to.
The shore which was close a moment ago seemed miles away. She started swimming towards it when some tentacles wrapped around her ankle. It pulled her down into the darkness. Even with her many years of underwater life she wasn’t able to keep holding her breath, the pressure and burning of her lungs were too much…
Just as she was about to exhale something tickled her neck and all of the sudden she was feeling with this bliss. Seconds turned into hour of joy as her lifeforce was slowly drained from her. The only sound she could hear was the rush of blood to her ears and it was slowing down. Getting slower and slower until it stopped.
Salty blood gushed into her mouth with a little salt water. It tasted better than anything she had ever tasted, greedily she gulped it down, and when the wrist was pulled away all she could think of is more. She felt her feet touch the sandy bottom and she was weak as a kitten. She was laid down on the sandy bottom and all she could think of was why am I not drowning?
A very heavy weight was placed on her chest pinning her to the sandy bottom. Then another across her legs. She laid there for four days struggling to get free. Her hands were free and was able to catch enough sea critters to keep herself fed.
Over the next three nights her body changed and twisted. Bones stretched and cracked, fat and muscle redistributed around her body. She couldn’t scream from the pain with the water that filled her lungs. At the end of the second night she started hearing voices, by the third night she was talking back to them.
When she woke that fourth night the pain had stopped. Her body had stopped changing. Now all she felt was the hunger. “You need to get free” I know “Why don’t you try and life the rock again?” Cause that didn’t work. “Well try again what other plans you have” Fair. This time she lifted the rock on her chest easily then kicked the rock from her legs. Everything was dark so she started to swim. The water rushed by faster than it ever had before, each kick was strong and powerful. She broke the surface of the water with such force she was air bound for a second before she crashed back into the water. It was a moonless night when she stumbled on to the shore. She was having problems walking, her legs weren’t working correctly. She kept tripping on things, felt like her feet had clown shoes on. There was a splash off to her right and she spun around to see him.
The man… thing was Huge. Even in the low light he toward over her. His hands twitched like it was made out of snakes. He was saying something which she couldn’t made out until she came closer. “…Mine” His voice was rough, words sounded odd. “You.. finally.. Mine Kalei. We are.. Married.”
Leilani’s feet slowly start backing away from his monster. “Married? What are you…” Something is wrong with her voice, it’s deep and sounds nothing like her. “What have you done to me?”
The monster takes a step forward “I am.. Kamohoalii, our marriage was... foretold by our ancestors. No one on.. land will accept you now Kalei, Your fate is bound to mine. I lov..” whatever else the monster had to say was lost as Leilani was running away.
Her feet struck the ground hard but she was still as graceful as ever. She ran for a good hour before realizing she wasn’t getting tired. Not even breathing hard… or breathing for that fact. If three years of med school had taught her anything breathing is fairly important.
Looking around she saw a dress shop. The window display had a full length mirror with “See yourself in a new dress this season” written on the wall behind it. Leilani caught view of herself in the light. Gone was the dusky smooth skin, firm breast, and athletic legs. She only saw a horrible monster looking back at her with her eyes.
She didn’t recall screaming or passing out. A while later she felt light as a feather slowly floating away. The voice had returned and talking non-stop about what a horrible monster she had become. She felt the edges of her sanity rip and tear and the world shifted in and out
When she awoke she was on a cot in a cement room “Don’t worry sister, you’re safe. Welcome to the Nosferatu.”
