Fawrion pushed into the pub, Sophia in her arms sobbing, and Nuri right on her heels with a stricken Lulu in his arms. She passed Sophia off to Erebus and got Nuri settled in a seat next to Erebus. She went to the bar, and grabbed strong, hot drinks for everyone. She returned and placed the drinks out for her pack. Fawrion stood behind her pack, giving a strangely stern yet sad look upon all who might have noticed their entrance. She downed the hot drink, not caring about the various burning sensations. Resolved and renewed, she strode from the pub, placing the tankard on the bar as she passed, placing a hand both on Death Dancer and Amalric. She walked out toward the street, following a path towards the woods they had found. As soon as she was far enough in, she shifted to lupus and ran.
She ran as fast as her legs would reach, wind whipping her fur. Jumping fallen logs and splashing without care through streams of freezing water. She ran for hours, no real direction in mind. Tears streaked from her face as her paws thundered the ground. She stayed to the woods and farmlands as best she could, so no one would think of seeing a wolf on the run.
When her tears had run dry, so had her desire to run anymore. She stopped near a farm stead, far north of where she had started. She shifted back to homid, the closer she came to the city. She wandered the streets looking into the tiny shop windows and letting questions filter through her mind she would normall ask her pack. 'Why read books? Why do people give each other flowers? People keep pets? What kind? What for?' These questions burned her heart a little, as her normal friend she asked was gone. She stopped, looked up, and found herself outside a rather large pet store. "Brridges", She read aloud, rolling the r in her thick Russian accent. 'Why name pet store after bridge?', She thought to herself. She shook off the strange thoughts and decided to walk inside.
Her eyes were met with a bright warm light. It was welcoming and homey looking. Shiney signs in bright colors and flashy bags in every shape and size. She hadn't realized she had been standing in the door way until she heard a small voice ask, "Can I help you ma'am?"
Fawrion jumped at the small voice, which frightened the tiny woman who stood in front of her. The little woman was tiny, and wirey, no taller than Sophia. She had bright red hair tied up in a pony tail that frizzed slightly. Fawrion smiled and said softly, "Just looking." The small woman just smiled back, nodded, and moved away.
Fawrion worked her way around the store, first staring oddly at the small kittens for sale, wondering if people actually thought it smart to keep them as pets. She veered away from the cages as their little paws darted out, begging to be played with. She moved through the food aisles, smelling and snorting at the dry bags and dusty cans. There was a large glass enclosure that kept drawing her attention, and after wandering down countless, pointless aisles, she came to it. Her heart stopped a beat as she realized there were rows of puppies.
They were all rather small, not very old, and really not paying attention to her as she stared through the glass. She couldn't believe that there were canine witless enough to be someones pet. She continued to stare through the almost glass when she caught the eyes of a small fluff ball who was staring back at her. It never moved, it just stared. She twitched her eyebrows and cocked her head. The puppy blinked back at her. Her brow furrowed and she stared hard at the puppy, her jaw hanging slightly open.
"Cute, isn't he?" She heard a voice say next to her. Fawrion jumped nearly out of her skin and had to check herself before she reacted badly in public. The small woman giggled slightly and apologized profusely. Fawrion shook her head and tried to reassure the woman that there was no harm done. The little woman went on about how a farmer had brought the little of pups but was rather secretive about what their breeding was. This kind of stuck in Fawrion's mind. The small red head then asked if she wanted to buy the puppy. It caught Fawrion off guard the thought of owning a pet. Dogs were roughly related to wolves, right? And how would you be owning it, if all you were doing was let it tag along with her? She could teach it to hunt... She shook her head.
"No, I should not. I wuld haf to ask family first." She said resolutely. The little woman pulled out a small slip of paper and started writing on it. It said 'Grey mix pup. On Hold for...'. She looked up and inquired Fawrion's name. She almost replied with Fawrion, but realized how that would sound. "Stana", she said softly. The red head nodded and wrote it down, then taped the slip to the window. This made Fawrion remember to ask Lulu about tape. That made her think about maybe it was time to move on.
Fawrion thanked the woman and walked away from the glass enclosure with a look back at the little grey pup. It winked at her, she was sure, but she shook the thought out of her head.
She was just about to walk out the door, when a rack by the check out counter caught her attention. It had post cards and greeting cards on it. The pictures on them were of wild animals, in poses that were adorable and funny. She walked to the rack and idle turned it. Bears, cats, birds, strange, rough looking animals. They were all there. Even wolves. She looked at the section where there were wolves pictured running, or howling. Doing normal everyday lupus things.
There was one that caught her sight that was wedged behind another, slightly obscured. She pulled it out of the rack and looked at it. And started to cry.
Pictured on the front were two wolves, one nuzzling under the neck of another with a big smile on it's face. Just as Rumor had done before they went off to fight. He had been the one friend that she had ever made in her life. Yes, he had been a pain at times, but he was the only one that could enjoy a good joke and some good food. He was like a little brother, and now he was gone.
As a tear dropped onto the card, that strange little woman came back up again, only this time she didn't say anything, she just rested her hand on Fawrion's arm, trying to reassure the tall fearsome woman in front of her.
Fawrion dug around in a pocket or two for what money she had managed to scrounge, pulled out the rumpled three dollars and handed it over to the little red head, then turned swiftly and walked out the door. It was time to go home. Time to make things right. Time to set the pain aside and not fail her pack again. Resolutely, she made her way back home.
