This is a question that for many people seems like common sense, but often causes me to think "Why not?" That is, there are many disciplines within vampire that require a specific target to produce their intended effect. Provided that the book does not say otherwise in the description of the power, or the effects of the power make such a thing logistically impossible, could a person use a discipline like this on themselves?
So far as I'm aware, there's nothing within the system that says they can not. Granted, many disciplines people would not likely want to use on themselves, but then this is not a question of motivation -- it's one of capability.
Here are a few examples I can think of off the top of my head.:
- A budding necromancer seeks greater understanding of death, and so in the quest for moral and academic purity he or she uses the ritual "Eyes of the Grave" on herself to become better connected tol the innate terror that comes with so many cainites death.
- A Toreador has been feeling extremely depressed after her recent experience at the last party wherin her wood carving of the the Malkavian primogen's image in a grilled cheese sandwich was condemned as total crap. She thought the work was a wonderful parody, but the scorn of her peers have left her with very little self esteeb. Hating to feel this way about herself, she looks down into her open palms in her lap and uses entrancement on herself to temporarily increase her self esteem. She feels alot better now, but may run the risk of developing the meglamania derangement or vanglorius flaw.
- A malkavian doctor REFUSES to believe that he is crazy. He is the only one in the clan that's not, becaise damn it there really are people knocking in the walls. Oh no, no one is going to rationalize HIM out of his condition. His experience is what makes it real. He passive agressively uses "The Haunting" on himself to add even more halucinations to his halucinations to rationalize to himself that he is in fact completely sane.
- A Daughter of Cacophony becomes extremely distressed at the sight of blood. If she were still breathing, she'd think she might be one to stop at any moment. As many daughters do, however, she has found that the power of music can help her make it through any situation. She begins quietly singing a peaceful song to calm her nerves, and backs it up with the power of Madrigal (Melpominee 3), to inspire a sense of calmness, or peace within her.
Personally I don't see line of sight requirements being a problem simply because most people can look down and see themselves. Most line of sight requirements do not demand that the people have to see each other's faces -- if that were the case, it might as well be am eye contact requirement. For disciplines that require eye contact... that's a bit more tricky as an ST would have to rule whether or not looking in a mirror (sorry Lasombra) constitutes eye contact.
