Some people wonder why I smile all the time. The answer is simple and complex. As everything in life is. I’ve been trained by everyone to put a pleasant face on at all times—by parents, by training, by blood. But that is not the real reason I smile.
I smile mostly because I’m damn happy to be alive—again. I’ve died twice now. Three times if you count the first time as a mortal under the tender administrations of the Cairo government. There’s a story there but that’s for another time, another place.
I smile now because this court is so different than Cairo. It really is like going back to college. My time is my own. My pursuits (of pleasure) my own. My needs are mine to fulfill the way I want to. I smile now because no one knows me. I see the curiosity at my smile which makes me smile all the more.
Of course I have secrets. We all do. They want to know what the Ventrue treasure I found in the desert was but that is not my secret to give away. Still, they know I know and, like a game, the questions come. I’ve been questioned by the best and worst. Mortal and kindred. I fear no questions.
Well, that’s not exactly true. But, again, my secret, my smile.
I also smile because it invites people in. I really do want to talk to people, learn about them, and figure out where they fit into the pattern of Seattle’s court. Everyone has their story. In time, I will learn them all. Such lovely stories, such juicy secrets. I will know who hides the bodies and where. I will know who holds the leashes. I will know every dream.
I will smile at each new discovery.
And then I will hunt.
