The nights have been long with the Red-Lister at our doors. The world looks on and casts its varying opinions in favor of or in dissent of our strong, fine court, and the losses of our kind to misfortune and assaults add to the cacophony of chaos that rises about our ears. Tensions are running high and there’s the distinct taste of blood on our lips while we gnash our teeth and clench our fists, feeling powerless against the tides that rise against the Kindred in our fair domain.
And among these problems, we have the time to worry about whether someone’s gifts of the blood are used within proximity of Elysium. Where was the Keeper when the voices began to raise this week? Not in Elysium, and when teeth grew sharp and tempers grew short, the Kindred within his safety net committed the most grave of sins:
They used their powers of the blood to stop a breach of his halls.
It would be expected that the Keeper might feel the need to thank those who stopped his Elysium’s walls from being stained with violence, but instead, Mr. Mercer felt it appropriate to attempt to bypass the rules of status and attempt to strip the Harpy for what was not a breach of the Elysium, nor a breach of the Masquerade--the two things he is permitted to strip status for without going through the Harpy for a call of scandal.
What an unfortunate miscommunication.
For this miscommunication, Mr. Mercer accepted a boon from Octavio Papo Cortes in order to allow the Harpy to do her duties… how magnanimous of Mr. Cortes to realize that without a distraction, our Honorable Keeper would have certainly stepped completely out of his place and be paying for it very heavily now.
It is a quirk in many cities to deny certain powers of the blood in Elysium. Domination is an attack on the mind, and the potence of our strength can be used to great violent effect.. but there are some that are harmless, and it is notable that many of the more harmless powers are the ones you notice and punish more frequently in Seattle. For example, Obfuscation assists the Clan Nosferatu in passing without possible Masquerade issues.. Auspex allows us to be careful in identifying the people whom we talk to.. and sometimes, Presence allows for the discontinuation of an Elysium outbreak of violence before the Elysium is breached.
I don’t mind this rule in our Elysium--I only mind the extent to which it is abused. The primary concern of the Keeper is the purpose of keeping Elysium from being breached, not the control of the powers of the blood. If he wishes to have this rule, that is a choice that the Keeper must make.. but if it will punish those who would stop bloodshed, then he has forgotten his duties.
Ah, and next time, make sure to use the Harpy to cry scandal if the unspoken rules are broken.
