This is not a personal attack on anyone, or a statement about previous staffs or anything like that. I am a new player, new to the ECC. I have been gaming with the Vampire sphere for less than a year and I have to say I am confused.
What game are we playing?
In my brief time here, I have seen rules used from almost every White-Wolf classic World of Darkness setting. I have seen wraiths that appear to use arcanoi. I have seen demons using rules from Fallen. I have seen modern Vampires playing with rituals from Dark Ages. Other things from other games popping up has just been rumor and hearsay.
The problem isn’t that I don’t feel like these rules have a place, or like these story elements have a place in game, I do. The problem for me is that every addition to the rules creates a larger and larger burden for any staff members, now or in the future. We are operating under a system that is completely unsustainable. The burden is carried by players also, since in order to be an educated player I would need to read innumerable rules from dozens of books, in addition to any house rules that ECC has listed on the website.
Running a LARP is already far more difficult than running a table top game. Staff members on a LARP staff must support the logistics, rules and stories for dozens of players. On top of supporting more players, the staff needs to run like a team where everyone is playing from the same playbook. I know there have been lots of hard work done recently to make sure that everyone is on the same playbook, but the result is a playbook where if you looked at the sum total of all of the rules required to play the game as it is it would be one of the largest books ever written. We do not have one document, one point of contact, one device or system that supports those rules. No one knows all of the rules, nor are all the resources in one place.
If there is anyone who knows all of the rules, please point them out, I would like to thank them, know them better and pay for their entry to game for the next year. If there is a single point where all of the rules we use at game can be found, that is accessible at game, please point it out to me and the other players that might be confused about this.
Right now, someone could pull out a character sheet (something we are required to have when facing challenges) and have things on it that I couldn’t hope to have any idea of understanding. Not that I don’t know Vampire, I have played Vampire for years in all of its versions, but the details get fuzzy. Now we have material being used from every version of Vampire, Dark ages and some material being used from other game lines entirely. How can anyone keep track of what game we are playing or how it works? How much of a burden does this put on new players who haven’t been playing this game for 15 years? Why do we keep adding to the playbook at such an aggressive pace?
I love this game, I love the people, I love the history, but the current state of the rules just seems to be a nightmare.
Are my questions valid? Am I off base? Am I misunderstanding the game?
I would love to hear feedback on how this game could be improved, if I am wrong I would love to have it explained so that I can stop being so confused about what game I am playing.
