The Domain was saddened to hear of the Final Death of Silas Boren at the hands of killers unknown two weeks ago. It is unlikely that we will see his like again, and Seattle should hope it never does. I can’t pretend that I knew him well, but will I add his name to a short list I keep of people who nearly killed me—not because they particularly wanted me dead (the exception being my Sire, who very nearly caused my execution along with his own for Embracing me outside Progeny, the fool), but because their unique view of the world was so dramatically different than that of the powerful that I risked utter destruction simply by my proximity to them. I miss Silas Boren’s unconventionality even less than I do his domineering nature and his clumsy, ham-fisted grasp of politics.
Ariel Martin died mysteriously last week. On her way back to Elysium from Gasworks park (that's a park we have here; has grass and mortal artwork in it), she was assaulted by a spiritual entity. Once she entered Tiki Tom’s (the Elysium at the time), her soul was ripped from her body and flung into the heart of the Abyss where she was destroyed utterly. How exactly this was done is still a mystery, but Ascanio Giovanni (who claims to be quite highly ranked amongst the Necromancers) has informed me that he could replicate exactly what was done to Ariel Martin with the use of his powers, suggesting the actual murder was most likely committed by a vampire using Necromancy (which narrows down the list of suspects quite a bit, I should think). Sheriff Riggs has taken no visible steps to apprehend his clanmate’s killer.
Not long after Martin’s demise, a creature once known as Richard Castle and as Ebenezer Smith was captured fleeing through Tacoma. The Kindred involved (who have asked to remain nameless) hired Ascanio Giovanni to bind the ghostly Castle into a figurine that he had stolen some time before his initial discorporation, which they then turned over to Prince Bella Maurice to face judgment. As a service to the Prince, I interrogated Richard Castle to ascertain his guilt, and I found it to be as twisted and broken a creature as I have ever encountered. It had, in its madness, become convinced that the former Prince, Colin Colissimo, had made it Scourge and given it a list of targets that it was to assassinate. On this supposed list was Ariel Martin and Maldra Dell, the only two remaining members of the Lionel bloodline, as well as Robert “Grizz” Grizzly, a potent Brujah warrior, Knight of the Emerald Domain and Richard Castle’s first victim. For his crimes, Prince Bella Maurice sentenced Castle to Final Death by Amaranth. Though several members of the Domain offered to do the deed to spare her the torment of having to feel the shattered remnants of Castle’s soul writhe in the final agonizing moments of its existence before her onslaught, Prince Bella declined their offers, insisting that she could and would see justice done at any cost, even that of her own illusions. The execution was a semi-private affair, being attended only by the court. The Amaranth cannot be called beautiful. It is a terrible thing to do, devouring the very spark of divinity that we all cultivate. Yet I have seen few sights that I would call more moving than that of Bella Maurice in the midst of Amaranth itself, with blood tears coursing down her lovely face.
The execution was held after a funeral service in Ariel Martin’s honor. While I will admit some confusion about why such ceremony was held for Ariel Martin and not for many of the other, more prominent Kindred that have stained Seattle with their blood and ashes, I will not make sport of it. Apparently, the inexplicably esteemed Brujah neonate was part of a coterie with Bella for some time only a few years ago (so, most of Ariel’s existence). I shall put the Prince’s odd display of emotion for Ariel down to a close association in the recent past, and leave it at that.
The former Keeper of Elysium, “Mad” Tom Mercer found himself duty-bound to leave the position and take up his Cross as Primogen of Clan Malkavian in Seattle after Simone Harvey, the previous office-holder, left the Council without a word to the Domain at large. I am assured that she just does this sometimes.
As Keeper of Elysium was left vacant, Prince Bella has named Tristan McKenna, a respected member of Clan Toreador, to that position. Tristan has selected Alice Harte, whom she finds as admired as she is, to be her Host, a choice I most heartily agree with.
Until Tristan chooses somewhere of her own to act as the Emerald Domain’s gathering place, I have placed at her disposal a space that I prepared as Host under Tom Mercer, but never used. She may use it for as long as she desires.
There have been more shuffling of court positions as some Kindred who had previously been absent or not interested in serving Prince Bella have resurfaced and given her their loyalty. Among these, Hephaestus, former Sheriff of the Emerald Domain under Colin Colissimo, has returned from seclusion in his underground laboratories to once again prowl the streets in service to the Prince, who has restored his position to him at his request.
Also joining Prince Bella’s court is Aristat Alexandrei, whom Bella has named as her Scourge and granted the Right of Destruction, which she has withheld from all others.
The final matter I wished to touch on this week was the surprising number of letters we received from elders abroad who seem to be out of touch with the situation as it stands in Seattle. I did get a little tired of reading these letters, since I have spent a lot of my admittedly brief time as harpy repeating such things incessantly. If this happens again, your own harpy should mock you for being so painfully lazy that you cannot be bothered to ask said harpy who the Prince of Seattle is. After all, it is part of our job to keep informed on such things. So please, let us help you not look like a fool when next you fumble futilely to keep track of events way out here. If you wish, I will personally attend you and answer any questions you have about our beautiful Emerald jewel and its beautiful Prince. In case you decline or are too busy chuckling quietly to yourself over your schemes to actually notice that there are now trains, telegraphs, and even more convenient methods of getting information quickly and accurately, let me just say that “Dear Occupant…” is not an acceptable way to address your letter to the Prince.
