Before I begin the report in earnest, I must take a moment to retract a comment I made in the report last week regarding Veritas’ proverbial handiness. After discussion with Seneschal Hamza, I was persuaded that my perception of the situation was skewed somewhat, and that Veritas is an upstanding and virtuous member of the Camarilla and the Assamite Clan. As the Prince received a late-arriving missive from a Justicar that asked for Veritas to be released from his duties in the Emerald Domain and permitted to attend to the Justicar’s business elsewhere, She too has reversed her spoken view of the man, since he can hardly be blamed for the delay of the courier.
The events of this week were absurd in the extreme, and many were rather disturbing to my mind. Greatest among these was the apparent murder of Tremere Primogen Emelian Fantana by killers unknown, but not insignificant occurrences included the arrival and departure of the Beatrix Mongano’s assistant and the ascension of Asim to the Prince’s Council of advisors.
The Assamite seat on the Primogen Council was filled for what I believe to be the first time in this Domain. The new Primogen is Asim, who is quite probably also the first Kindred to jump almost immediately from being a suspiciously scrutinized Anarch to a lofty position among the most respected elders anywhere in the Camarilla. It is known to the Justicars that Asim of Clan Assamite is many things, but most notably he is to be feared for his subtly effective use of his wachom and fortitudo in the sanctioned way he repraesentat Turris Eburnea. While the messenger of these tidings made himself extremely unwelcome, Asim himself is an extremely welcome addition to the Emerald Domain and the Primogen Council. He informed me that believes that I am as able to repraesentat the Turris Ebrurnea as he is. I am grateful for his sentiments, even if I do not understand why they had to come in a foreign language.
Several new Kindred of interest have entered the Domain, the first of these being Louis of Marseilles, a Ventrue of moderate reputation who has come to get out from under his Sire and see if, in stretching his wings, he soars or makes an unpleasant mess on the sidewalk. In my brief speech with him, he seemed to have at least a passing familiarity with messes, but I’m certain that someone as remarkably savvy as Primogen Colson will be able to keep him out of too much trouble.
The other new arrival is Mercedes Grey, a Nosferatu Sired by Ikon Grey, and also of moderate reputation.
Simon, a Gangrel formerly of the Great Pack, has joined the Emerald Domain as a newly acknowledged Camarilla member. Prince Bella Maurice was pleased to make the acknowledgement, remarking to me that Simon’s proficiencies in a wide variety of disparate talents is another welcome addition to Her Domain.
Due to personal reasons, Aristat Alexandrei resigned her position as Keeper of Elysium last week and has taken a vacation from the admittedly unreasonably fast pace of events in the Emerald Domain. Prince Bella Maurice appointed Morris Tobias as Keeper in her stead.
Will Scarlet has recently resumed his rash displays, even going so far as to declare a course of action directly counter to the Prince’s express will. I feel forced to reconsider my change of tune when singing of Will Scarlet’s impetuosity. I suggest that mister Scarlet focus his attention in the upcoming weeks on proving that he is capable of loyalty to the Prince and her edicts, not merely loyalty to his own base desires and grudges.
After a rather tense encounter with an unexpected threat to the Domain, Jibran Ibn Tunis was noted to have been an exceptionally serene presence throughout by Seneschal Hamza. When his observation was mentioned to the Prince, She agreed with the assessment wholeheartedly.
The Malkavian Allegra Tali blundered badly by bringing a free-willed human into Elysium. She is fortunate indeed that the attention of the powerful was diverted almost immediately after her near-breach was discovered, and that her shocking lack of thought is being punished so lightly.
Corbizier of Clan Temere raged into the Elysium toting the lightning-charred corpse of Emelian Fantana. I, of course, was extremely saddened to see the final death of one whom I considered among my good friends and allies. It wasn’t long after the departure of Corbizier that some question was raised over whether the death was in some way staged to implicate the mages that had been ultimately the doing of Ascanio Giovanni. I understand that investigations are still underway, though all current evidence points to the appearance being the reality.
In a way, it was fortunate that Emelian died when he did, as he would have had to suffer the indignity of having his name used and defamed before all the world had he survived. The unexpected appearance of Beatrix Mangano’s assistant to the Domain proved to be ill fortune for all involved, himself not least. The fool in question, formerly known as Diego Delimon (I will, out of respect for his Clan, refrain from publicly connecting him with them), assaulted the Emerald Domain while the Prince and myself were absent from Elysium. Had I not been alerted to the attack by one of my Clanmates, he may have been able to escape cleanly, but unfortunately for him, I arrived in time to defend my honor and that of the Domain from his ridiculous attempt to sabotage me and the Primogen Council that supported me (as a brief aside, I will never forget that, in the middle of the conflict, Morris Tobias declared that he found my defense of my name and those of the Primogen Council an honorable undertaking and added the weight of his name to mine and theirs, despite the very real risk involved in the maneuver). The supposed reason for the imbecilic Delimon’s attempt at political warfare was the title “Knight of the Emerald Domain” that the Prince wished to make known was undeserved (Her reasons for so doing are superb, of course, and if the reader wished to know the details, I direct their attention to last week’s report). It appears that Delimon the Half-Witted overheard his mistress make some comment that such came close to impinging on power that was not rightly that of Prince Bella Maurice, and took action on his own, apparently without reading the report himself. Had he taken the time to read it, he would have found that Prince Bella Maurice claims no such power, but merely states Her opinion that those abroad should not be claiming Knighthoods in Domains they are not in sworn service to. It seems that the lackwit Diego ‘thought’ to do his mistress a service and see to the problem himself by making the ridiculous claim that the matter was so serious that it demanded the loss of all my standing within the Camarilla and the good names of those Primogen who refused to pull their support from me, which, despite the lies and trickery of Delimon, was nearly all of them. Needless to say, I did not take kindly to his behaviour, and demanded to speak with Beatrix immediately. She, in contrast to her outrageously high-handed assistant, was quite conciliatory, and calmed my considerable ire by wisely throwing her wayward helper under the bus. She explained to me that his actions were taken without approval of any sort and suggested that I should handle the affair as I felt just, to which I replied that I, alas, was not given Right of Destruction under Prince Bella Maurice. When we finished laughing over that, I allowed the slime Diego Delimon to recant his blather about my standing and that of the Primogen Council that supported me. I then graciously gave the worm the option to grovel before me and beg for my forgiveness. Fortunately for him, he did just that, though I found his performance uninspired and wooden.
In discussing reparations with Beatrix Mangano, I secured Diego’s immediate dismissal from her service, as well as a Blood boon over the insect (which I frankly consider as near to worthless as makes no difference), and Mangano’s offer of the cretin’s former position as her Assistant Greater Harpy, which I will humbly accept (with the stipulation that I not be required to step down as the Harpy of the Emerald Domain), and in recognition of which I shall not pursue my grievance against the wretch Delimon. Indeed, so enlightened a soul am I that I shall even make him the offer to mentor him, though I fear that will likely have to wait until he finds the courage to crawl from whatever foul pit he eventually secrets himself to cry humiliated blood tears where no-one can see him take out his impotent, resentful rage on the other invertebrate inhabitants.
This segues rather neatly into my next topic of interest; I have heard whispers against Prince Bella Maurice from some individuals outside the Emerald Domain. I find it telling that only those that haven’t actually lived under Prince Bella Maurice’s rule give voice the notion that Praxis be seized by another. It is this, on top of the attempt sabotage myself, that has driven both myself and the Prince to the point of what I choose to call "direct speaking". Her Grace composed a brief letter which is an excellent example of same, which I am pleased to include here.
Respected Kindred of the world,
It has come to my attention that I may have stepped on several toes in my short, but solid reign as Prince of Seattle. The loudest seems to be the most out of place to me: this issue of the Knights of the Emerald Domain.
As none of these brave warriors who swore their fealty to my land remain, indeed, in my land, I no longer see it fit to recognize these kindred as Her knights, Her protectors. If they were to return, I would see it quite just to strip them of this status, as I take abandonment of one's duties quite seriously.
Should you wish to continue to recognize these kindred as Knights of another Domain while they are Acknowledged in yours, I'm certain that is your business.
To any other offenses I may have committed unknowingly, I'm sure that a conversation about said occurrence would easily resolve said issue. I'm quite reasonable, my primary focus being the well-being and stability of my City.
If, however, you are unwilling to talk it out like Elders, then I encourage you, come at me. I assure you, I will die before I see my city fall to one who does not have Her best interests in mind, and I certainly will not go quietly. Rather, in a blaze of glory, and I will bring those who oppose me down into the inferno with me.
All my love,
Bella Maurice
xoxo
Despite Her talent for direct speaking, I find myself unable contain commentary of my own, so I shall simply say this:
Bella Maurice is a fucking incredible Prince. She is well-loved by Her subjects and backed by an upper court that is easily among the most competent I have seen in two centuries of traveling the Camarilla cities of the world.
Furthermore, I am a fucking incredible--if oft immodest--Harpy, and I am backed by the most constructive and cooperative Primogen Council that I have ever seen anywhere.
I know why there are some shitheads out there who are trying to ruin our glittering future by pulling strings. Now, the act of string-pulling itself I cannot fault--it’s what we do. I can fault the motivations for doing so, however. Jealousy, paranoia or petty power-grabbing are not sufficient reason to threaten the tender stability that all members of the Domain have laboured so diligently to achieve following the cascade of disastrous near-misses and the several direct and calamitous hits that shattered the Domain and very nearly dropped it into a chaos of coup and counter-coup. That said, kindly desist.
I am not so warm that I believe my words will reach all of those that read them. I have no delusions that the Emerald Domain can escape the machinations of the Jyhad, but my words are not intended to stay meddling hands. Rather, they are meant as a warning as much as those of the Prince, but in case you missed that, I'll indulge in a little direct speaking of my own.
I know a lot of very interesting trivia. Names, places, dates... I learned many things in my tour of the world. So if you’re the gambling sort, please do try to provide me a bit of sport before I outmaneuver and trap you and make you too crawl to my feet to beg for my forgiveness.
Now, if you aren't in the mood to gamble and you find yourself interested in a friendly game of chess and a bit of a chat, you’ll find me most accommodating.
