The vault had been empty. Far emptier than it could possibly have been. She had already known, though. It was a foolish hope that caused her to check. That small spark that had still flickered.
The bottom had fallen out from under her. It felt as though she were falling, as though she would never stop. She had failed in what she considered her primary duty, and the logs told her that somehow she failed far more than she could have known.
She glanced out at the night, still finding no recollection of how she came to be here. She was......safe?.....here, as safe as she could be. She did remember informing Danels as to how she could be reached, but the rest of that night was an incomprehensible blurry static. Things happened, but she could not say what.
She had not notified Venice yet, nor had she allowed it.
"I have heard that when one sleeps for so long, time goes into reverse. I did not believe that until just now."
Those words, and the context in which they were used, rang in her head. They gave doubt to something she strongly believed in. It brought to light that, if the world had changed so drastically, so could other things. Things that might not have changed had she been there. Things that might have been nipped in the bud and rectified had she not been thought dead.
That she even considered this betrayal from within rocked the foundations she stood on. The foundations that she had built her way of life on, the foundations that gave her the inner strength she had found great need to call upon of late.
If one could not place trust in her foundations, and in those who she believed to be so trustworthy, how could she trust anyone? How could she trust the one who had taken it upon herself to be her guardian at this time if she could not trust one who was even closer to her heart and mind?
She had to think carefully on this. She had to tread carefully with this. Sadly, the signs could be seen, but they could be red herrings, as well. The key was to investigate, and not let the subject know that there was suspicion on them. She had to speak of it carefully, and she did not know who to trust. The person she wished most to speak with, who might be able to give her direction, was fairly inaccessible, too busy to deal with what may prove to be false and trivial.
This was not something she could yet discuss with anyone close to the situation. It was something she had to figure out, first.
Fresh blood ran down her delicate features as she turned away from the window to stare into the dark room. The future was blurred, and if the fear that paralyzed her was proven to be truth, she would lose one over another. She must not waste much time.
But, if it were true, her wrath would rain down on those resposible for this hell she was again thrust into.
