As her visitor left, coherent thought slowly formed in the chaotic nothingness that had become her mind. Unlike the moments that forced her mind to attempt to function, these thoughts were crystal clear.
Words whispered to her lies, deceit, and betrayal from those she knew. Things that could jeopardize her existence, destroy her. One by one, faces appeared before her mind’s eye, each bringing some contemplation. Each one was evaluated carefully, filed away to separate files, threat and non-threat and uncertain. Those that her mind considered “safe” were ignored, put from her thoughts.
There were few of those that she truly considered a threat. She filed through them one by one, determining the level of which they were a danger. Many of them were filed into thoughts of who could be bought, and who could be coerced. The remainder often found themselves dead, and remorse was absent. No second thoughts. There were a small handful that found themselves on the list of keep your enemies closer. With caution, they could be prevented from doing anything that would bring her end.
The rest suffered their ends. Each one different, some quick, but most suffered greatly before they died. It didn’t matter Kindred or Kine, friend or aquaintence, family or hated enemy. Each one that could bring her end with but a slip of a word, or a notion in the right place. Or a knife in the back. There were some she did not put past that.
When her mind was done peeling away the layers of skin, and slowly dismembering those that it had chosen, it moved on to the final group.
Those she was uncertain of. In a rough sort, she had barely noticed who had made it into that list. Now that she could inspect it, it was those closest to her. Those who should be her allies.
Thought moved in slow motion now, properly sorting and dealing with each individual until it came to the last one.
That one floated there for a long while. It was contemplated for a long while. The implications of what that one had done to her, what their existence cost, what their success meant……..
Yet, there was nothing she could do. That one had also done so much for her. They had given her moments of peace in times of uproar.
No part of her could raise a hand to strike down the greatest danger to her.
And she shook with fear.
