What have I become?
He looked over the varied responses, the words and questions salivating with potential scandal and mockery. And it was all fed from honesty. His honesty.
And yet he knew he had been no better.
A simple, puerile gossip. What master did he serve now?
The worst kind. The most base and barbarous.
He looked at his nearly completed reply to the multitude of them. There had to be something noble in this. There had to be.
He would make it be.
He wrote:
If the suspense of my word moves this administration more quickly towards a satisfactory resolution in this matter, and if I risk internal reprisal for doing so, than so be it.
He forced a sigh, and concluded:
If the individual cogs do not themselves have faith in the system for which they work, than the machine will fail.
He looked over the whole of the note, recognized the points that would most likely be attacked, but shrugged. It was right. It was just.
Slowly, he hit the 'Send' button.
God help me.
